BIOGRAPHICAL NOTICES OF AUTHORS.

"The Escape of Mary Queen of Scots" from "The Abbot." Shakespeare, William (1564-1616).

-Though Shakespeare's name is
the greatest in our literature,
yet we know comparatively
little of the details of his life.
Born at Stratford-on-Avon,
where his father was a pros-
perous burgess, Shakespeare
married at 17, and after some
five or six years, in consequence
probably of the declining for-
tunes of his family, left his wife
and three children at Stratford,
and went himself to London,
where he became an actor, and
was also employed to alter old
plays. After about five years of
this humble labour, he began to
produce original dramas. These
have been divided by critics
into three groups or periods of
composition. The first, from
1590 to 1596, consists of
English historical plays, of
comedies, and the tragedy of
"Romeo and Juliet; " also the
beautiful and fanciful
"Mid-
summer Night's Dream." Then
came the Merchant of Venice."
The next group, written between
1601-1608, contains the great
tragedies, 'Hamlet,' "Othel-
lo," "Macbeth," and others,
and the graver comedies, such
as "Much Ado about No-
thing."
After 1608, Shake-
speare produced the peaceful
and beautiful romantic plays,
Cymbeline," "The Winter's
Tale," and "The Tempest.
His sonnets were probably
written between 1595-1605.
The last five years of Shake-
speare's life were spent with
his family in comfortable retire-

ment at Stratford, where he died. Few writers have So sounded the depths of the human heart as Shakespeare. His plays not only reflect the many problems which were stirring in men's minds in his own day; they are a storehouse of truths and lessons which are the same for all ages, showing always the ultimate triumph of good over evil in its many forms. Apart from his genius as a dramatist, he is a teacher-the greatest (among writers at least) that the world has ever

seen.

Shelley, Percy Bysshe (1792

1822). A poet, whose works are distinguished by high imaginative power and melodious expression. Among the best known of his longer poems are "Prometheus Unbound," "The Cenci," "Adonais," and "The Revolt of Islam." He is also the author of some of the most exquisite lyric poems in our language, and of "Essays and" Letters." His career was brought to an early and tragic end; he was drowned off the coast of Italy, as it was long supposed, by accident, but a fisherman on his death-bed confessed to having intentionally upset the boat in order to rob Shelley, whom he supposed to be Lord Byron. Trench, Richard Chenevix.-Born 1807. Distinguished as a poet, theologian, and scholar. Is still living (1885), and has recently resigned the archbishopric of Dublin, which he held since 1864.
