"It is a series of Black Classics, wherein the color is an accident, the soul human and universal. All that Mr. Page had to do-and he has done it well-was to be a faithful recording angel,' to open a sympathetic and retentive ear, to reproduce in firm outlines what every-day life in Virginia abundantly provides, and to clothe the whole in a humorous dialect which is to the psychology what the salt is to the soup."-Critic, viii. 14.

"So well has the mass of material been assimilated that the result, far from being a series of heavy papers redolent of the musty tomes from which they have been gathered, has evolved itself, ... for the most part, into a number of charming sketches touched in with the light and sure hand of a master."-Spectator, lxi. 361.

5. Euphorion: being Studies of the Antique and the Mediæval in the Renaissance, Lon., 1884, 2 vols. 8vo. **Its merit is that it is not the compilation of laborious learning, but the direct utterance of an individual mind. Its faults lie in the incessant and undue assertion of this individuality, in confusing impressions with ideas, in a wanton riot of needlessly strong language, and in a harass ing and vexatious attempt to overwhelm us with tumultuous description. . . . Vernon Lee has drawn her knowledge of the Italian Renaissance from direct personal contact with its memorials, and her power of sympathetic interpretation has been admirably true. But she has not enjoyed the same advantages in regard to feudalism and asceticism which she is perpetually bringing into comparison with the Renaissance. When she writes about Italian art she is always suggestive and often convincing. When she indulges in historical generalizations she is wayward and even childish."-Sat. Rev., lviii. 317.

6. The Countess of Albany, ("Eminent Women" Ser.,) Lon., 1884, p. 8vo.

"Her style... is faulty; she sins from the habit of repetition, and in her eagerness to be forcible she shows no care in her choice of words. Bits of downright slang are thrust into sentences which are otherwise rather highflown. On the other hand, every page of the book bears witness to the author's ability, to her determination to realize her subject and make her readers realize it."-Ath., No. 2965.

7. Miss Brown: a Novel, Lon., 1884, 3 vols. cr. 8vo. "Miss Brown' is not only a vivid picture of human life, but also both a severe satire and a tragedy. The subject of the satire is the falseness of the aesthetic ideal, and the tendency of its worshippers to gravitate towards the grossest immorality, while that of the tragedy is the sacrifice, to put it shortly, of a noble character on the altar of gratitude. The difficult themes are treated with great brilliance and originality, and with a literary and imaginative force which deinand recognition. It is only to be regretted that both tragedy and satire are extremely and needlessly painful and unpleasant."-Acad., xxvii. 6.

8. Baldwin: being Dialogues on Views and Aspirations, Lon., 1886, 8vo. (The subjects discussed are: The Responsibilities of Unbelief, The Consolations of Belief, Honour and Evolution, Novels, The Value of the Ideal, and Doubts and Pessimism.)

"She is gifted with a large range of interests, a strong desire to see things clearly, and an uncommon turn for exposition, and is also gifted-if we should not rather say handicapped-with an inclination to write upon all sorts of subjects, and a great belief in the power of words to enlighten the hidden recesses of thought. Fluent by nature, she is in danger of becoming voluble by habit. We read the book on and on with continual respect and even admiration for the writer's acuteness, sincerity, and independence of thought, and for her faculty of putting forcibly what she has to say: but it cannot be asserted that the perusal is either delightful in process or wholly satisfactory in result."-Ath., No. 3059.

9. The Phantom Lover: a Fantastic Story. Lon. 1886, cr. 8vo. 10. Juvenilia: being a Second Series of Essays on Sundry Esthetical Questions, Lon., 1887, 2 vols. p. 8vo.

"The essays relate to a theme-that of fine art-which she now regards as more fitted for youthful readers and students than for those of riper years. . . . However this may be, she applies herself with her usual earnestness to the debating of various questions of fine art, and treats them in her accustomed method, -trenchant reasoning, candid, if at times extreme, and brilliant description having a somewhat Impressionist' bias, especially where items of colour effect are concerned."-Ath., No. 3119. GENERAL CRITICISM:

"She is at once subtle and audacious, engagingly frank in proclaiming her likes and dislikes, agreeably discursive, though never wantonly irrelevant, . . . and, finally, able to express her meaning with a literary ease, a wealth of imagery, and a refinement rather than polish of style, which render the perusal of her works an intellectual luxury of a high order."-Spectator, lxi. 143.

She is in a high degree clever, observant, and keenwitted, and has a great turn for arguing out all kinds of subjects. The writer spins a thread of argument very fine, and at last disposes her readers to discover some reason to the contrary rather than to acquiesce in her leadership."-Ath., No. 3119.
