The following singular circumstance happened after saddling Middlethorpe (who was very lofty and full of play) :—At the time the groom drew his bood over his head, the bridle-bits broke in two, and a handkerchief was instantly thrown round his neck, when the horse stood quiet whilst a fresh bridle was procured from a gentleman's horse near the place, which prevented any futther accident, and proved a very fortunate circumstance to those who had backed Middlethorpe along with Ashton as first and second.

Six to 4 agst Petronius, 7 to 4 agst Whitworth, and 5 to 1 agst Rover; after the first heat, 6 to 4 agst Petronius, and 5 to 2 agst Rover, after the second heat, 2 to 1 on Whitworth, and 3 to 1 agst Petronius, who won the third heat cleverly; but his rider wanting about an ounce of weight, and his horse having been incautiously led away before it was discovered, it became a disputed question whether the rider was entitled to weigh with the bridle or not; the Stewards, in consequence thereof, consulted with several respectable and uninterested gentlemen, when it was agreed, that as Petronius was led away from the Weighing-Stand, his rider was not entitled to the weight of the bridle, and the horse was of course deemed distanced, and the Purse given to Whitworth.-For the first heat, Rover made his own play, and won cleverly; for the second heat, Rover led for about a mile and a half, when Whitworth passed him, and Petronius challenged, but did not head, and after some severe running, Whitworth won the heat by half a head; for the third heat, Whitworth made play for about a mile and three quarters, when Petronius took the lead, and after some smart running, won the heat by about a length.

FRIDAY.-Mr. Hewett's Teazle Ovna, by Sir Peter, received forfeit from Mr. Brackenbury's Chancina, 8st. each, the St. Leger Course. —Mr. Hewett staked 100gs. to 50gs.

Mr. Johnson's Spaniard, by Waxy, received forfeit from Mr. Neville's Venetian, four miles, 100gs. h. ft.
