SPORTING INTELLIGENCE,

MAJOR Topham's celebrated greyhound, Friend, has been purchased to go into Ireland, as an introduction to a superior breed of greyhounds in that country. We hope to give his portrait in a future Number.

THE late race for the Jockey Club Plate, at Newmarket, between Mr. Villiers's Don Cossack, and Mr. Watson's Pericles (see Calendar) was one of the closest contests ever remembered. Pericles bad, we believe, never before been beaten. Goodison rode the winner, and Buckle rode Pericles. It was near seven o'clock before the company left the heath.

TWENTY-TWO horses are already entered for the Two Thousand Guinea Stakes at the first Spring Meeting for next year. Many

matches have been made for the Craven Meeting of 1819.

FINDON Races, Sussex, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the 2d, 3d, and 4th inst. excited considerable interest. All the

fashion, respectability, and native beauty of the surrounding towns and villages were assembled on the occasion. Four horses started for the gold cup on the first day, which was won by Mr. Hudson's ch. g.; Mr. Walker's gift of 100gs. was won by his own horse Gumguia❤ cum.-In the race, on the second day, for Mr. Walker's other gift of 50gs. Mr. Dyer's g. m. was victorious. The sport on the third day, was not so interesting as on the preceding days.

BATH Races are to take place on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, the 28th, 29th, and 30th of June. Great sport is anticipated. WE are sorry to find, that the Brighton Racing Fund is in a state of derangement, which threatens a loss of the turf-amusements. Mr. Shoubridge, the Clerk of the Course, is about to take up his residence in Kent, and have the principal management of the Tunbridge-Wells Races,

ON Monday, the 8th inst. Fair ville, by Orville, was thrown at Hambleton, for the purpose of operation, when unfortunately, his back was broken, and he died shortly sfter.

MR. Fawkes's crack pack of Doncaster hounds have been sold, and added to the Thornaby Hunt, in Cleveland.

THE Stilton Hunt is broken up, and the pack of harriers, consisting of twenty one couple, are to be brought to the hammer, with the Elton Hall stud of hunters.

THE Leeds coachmasters are making a merit of running their coaches at a most astonishing rate. -How is that noble brute, the horse, abused by brutes that wear the human form!

S. WATSON, of Farnham, was lately committed to the House of Correction at Woodbridge, by the Magistrates acting at Framlingham, for one month, for cruelly beating and ill-treating a mare, the property of Mr. Hesier, of Farnham, his master.

THE diversion of Hawking, a sport antiently much used, has been revived in this country on a considerable scale, by Lord Rivers, Major Wilson, of Didlington, Norfolk, and Mr. Downes, of Gunton. Their subscription hawks, under the management of German falconers, have afforded much amusement to numerous spectators at Didlington and the neighbour hood. After the races at Newmarket on Monday the 8th instant, these Hawks were flown off at some rooks in the Flat, on which they pounced with great avidity, , and speedily brought them down, to the great entertainment of the numerous spectators. On Saturday, the 20th instant, was played a grand match at tennis, at the Royal Tennis Court, James-street, Haymarket, between Mr. Cox, the proprietor, and Monsieur Marquiso, from Paris :-the former gave the latter half fifteen -the best of five sets-and Mr. C. won the three first sets in fine style: he is considered the best player in Europe. THE gold medal given by the Thistle Golf Club, was played for over Leith Links on Friday, May 5, and was gained by Archibald Ogilvie Dalgleish, Esq. of Scotscraig, Captain of the Club, at sixty-five strokes a number considered as unprecedented in the annals of any -other society.

THE Members of the Erith Sailing Society bave determined to give annually a piece of plate to he sailed for by gentlemen's plea sure boats, to be steered by the owner. The prize of the present year was sailed for on the 15th instant.

On the 5th of May, as the keepers of Phillips, Esq. of Hanbury Hall, and of the Rev. R. Pyndar, of Areley House, in the county of Worcester, were going through Strawley wood to fish, they flushed a fine woodcock, which fled a short distance and dropped. One of the keepers immediately ran back for two guns, leaving his companion to keep watch behind an oak, of which there are many ⚫ no small magnitude in this spacious wood. On beating about the spot, they not only put up the aforesaid bird (which proved to be an old one), but with it two young ones, all which they killed. These were served up at the table of the truly hospitable Mr. Pyndar, where a considerable number of fashionables were assembled to view so rare an exhibition; mirth and glee prevailed, and even the ladies were compelled to drink, "Success to VOL. PEDESTRIANISM.-On Wednes day, the 17th instant, a running match was performed by Mr. Henry Holman, of Southampton, in presence of a great concourse of spectators. Mr. H. set out from South ampton to Lymington, a distance of eighteen miles, at four o'clock on the above morning, and arrived at the latter place at twenty-four minutes past six o'clock, winning his wager, being thirty-six minutes within the given time, for the sum of one hundred guineas. What is remarkable, the above task was performed without perspira tion. The following is a correct statement:-first 7 miles in 48m. ; 8 ditto in 56m. ; 9 ditto in 1h. 4m.; 10 ditto in 1h. 12m.; 11 ditto in 1h. 20m.; 12 ditto in 1h. 29m.; 13 ditto in 1h. 37m.; 14 ditto in 1h. 46m.; 15 ditto in 1h. 57m.; 16 ditto in 2h. 4 min.; 17 ditto in 2h. 13m.; 18 ditto in 2h. 24m.

On Tuesday, the 9th instant, a young man of Dover, of the name of Richard Baker, undertook for a wager, to run a mile and a quarter in five minutes. The young man accomplished his arduous task with apparent ease; hets at start. ing were two to one against him.

An excellent foot race, two and a half miles, was run on Saturday, the 30th ult. for a considerable sum of money, over Stapleton race ground, by John Mothersdale, of Darlington, currier (who beat the celebrated Wood, at York), and William Johnson, of Stapleton, near Darlington, farmer, which was won by the former.
