A DICTIONARY

OF THE

ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

BY

ROBERT GORDON LATHAM, M.A. M.D. &c.

LATE FELLOW OF KING'S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE; LATE PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH IN UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, LONDON.

Abridged from Dr. LATHAM'S Edition of JOHNSON'S English Dictionary, and condensed into ONE VOLUME.

OPINIONS OF

'The high authority of the original work cannot fail to stamp this abridgment with a value of its own; and it will be a welsome addition to the library of many English students, to whom the larger work is, from its size and price, unattainable.'

EDUCATIONAL TIMES.

"The special excellences, and also the peculiarities, of Dr. LATHAM's great work are well known to scholars. He has replaced the incorrect and fanciful derivations of Dr. JOHNSON with the more accurate conclusions of modern philologists, and has replenished the vocabulary with a rich store of the newly-coined and technical words in every department of science which have lately come into use.'

INQUIRER.

'The book is rich in the voluminousness of its parallel meanings...... The words of the vocabulary are in strong black type, quite comforting to the eyes, and the general type is quite clear and readable. The full word (and not the mere syllable) which forms the top word of each column is placed as a guide on the top of the page. The book is carefully bound to lay open at any place without straining the binding, and in every way the convenience as well as satisfaction of the student is taken into consideration in the editing and the manufacture of the volume..... .This edition of LATHAM'S JOHNSON' is likely to become a favourite work in English libraries of reference.'

SCHOOL BOARD CHRONICLE.

This Dictionary is one of the standard equipments of the English student. It is probably the result of more learning, care, and thought than any other work of its class. With JOHNSON'S for a basis, the best labour of TODD is embodied in it, and the scholarship of LATHAM

[blocks in formation]

To those to whom the larger and more costly edition of this work is inaccessible, the present volume will be especially acceptable. Based upon the same principles, and arranged in the same form as its more compendious predecessor, the new edition is an extremely serviceable volume, and will give what many want, namely, a good, handy, trustworthy modern dictionary. When it is confessed that the work has been materially abridged, many will be curious to know in what direction the curtailments have been made, and if the real usefulness of the book has been abridged also. It will, therefore, be as well to state that it is in the abbreviation and omission of the extracts, given by way of authority and illustration, that space has been obtained, and the proportions of the book materially reduced. We are not aware that there is one word less in the present edition than in that previously published; but there are fewer examples given of the use and definition of words. The dictionary as it now stands is a very useful book of reference, and quite sufficient illustrations remain to shew the proper meaning and employment of most of the words in general use. The historical introduction will be found an instructive and interesting account of the origin, growth, and construction of the English language. The book is convenient in form and size, and though comprising over fifteen hundred pages, is by no means an unwieldy volume; the chief words on each page being printed in black type, greatly facilitates the work of reference.'
