PERSIAN TEXT BEAUTIFULLY PRINTED, BULAQ, A.H. 1268 (1851). THE IMPERIAL GAZETTEER OF INDIA. Published by Command of the Secretary of State for India. By W. W. HUNTER, C.I.E., LL.D., Director-General of Statistics to the Government of India. "A great work has been unostentatiously carried on for the last twelve years in India, the importance of which it is impossible to exaggerate, and the results of which are now, in a carefully-digested form, presented to the public. This is nothing less than a complete Statistical Survey of the entire British Empire in Hindostan. We have said enough to show that the Imperial Gazetteer' is no mere dry collection of statistics; it is a treasury from which the politician and economist may draw countless stores of valuable information, and into which the general reader can dip with the certainty of always finding something both to interest and instruct him."-The Times. "Ought to find a place in every library."-The Quarterly Review. "The most complete and satisfactory work of its kind which has ever been issued from the press. Of the importance of Dr. Hunter's book, of the orderly method in which he classifies and arranges his subjects, and of the literary skill displayed in the pages of the "Gazetteer," it would be impossible to speak too highly."-Morning Post. "To Dr. Hunter belongs the honour of having, by his rare gifts of luminous arrangement, administrative ability, and unflagging perseverance, supplied that essential qualification, the want of which had invariably led to failure.. A careful examination of several articles, including all the most important, will justify the conclusion that the literary skill and ability with which the work has been prepared is equal to the excellence of the plan upon which its lines have been built. The principal feature is the article on India, which occupies 515 pages, and is a complete work in itself... In it will be found, we believe for the first time, a brief but complete history of India from the original sources-Sanskrit, Muhammadan, and Hindu; in which the growth of the Hindu people is made clear and intelligible and the significance of caste and of the Hindu religion is distinctly revealed. For its literary merit alone this historical section will well repay perusal. It concludes with an excellent review of the existing system of British administration in India. .. The Imperial Gazetteer is the crowning work which brings the results of the great Statistical Survey within reach of the general public. . . It is no ordinary service that Dr. Hunter has done to India and to England; and for his hard and admirably performed achievement he has earned the gratitude of his countrymen."—Academy. "May without exaggeration be said to deserve to take rank among events of first class importance in the history of our Indian Empire. It presents us for the first time with a survey of Hindostan undertaken on a systematic method, and with the aid of all the existing machinery of central and local government, and it condenses and digests the enormous mass of information, historical, topographical, and statistical, in a form which may fairly be called accessible, though the nine solid volumes in which it is comprised will extend to some 5,000 pages."-Daily News. "It is too often forgotten that Gazetteers are or ought to be more than books of reference. They are commonly classed with dictionaries, as being much more useful than pleasing in a literary sense. Dr. Hunter has taken a higher, and, as we think, a sounder view of what is desirable in such a work. He does not think that facts are any better or more convincing because they are put before the reader in a repellent shape. This feeling has evidently guided him in the minutest details of his work. But it is shown in a high degree in every article of any length in the work, and especially in the article on India in the fourth volume. As a sketch of the past and present condition of India, it is well nigh exhaustive; as a literary effort, it must ever take a foremost place. This is a feature of the Gazetteer, the value of which can scarcely be overrated."-Scotsman. "Dr. Hunter has presented in a handy form, and at a cheap price, a digest of the official records, which is a model of combined lucidity, conciseness, and comprehensiveness. The Gazetteer, although arranged in the customary alphabetical order, is no mere bald summary of the survey reports. It deals fully with the topographical, agricultural, industrial, administrative, and medical aspects of the country, and incorporates, with the information collected at the public expense, the fruits of Dr. Hunter's own private researches, carried on over a long series of years. The value of a work of this kind, alike to the politician, the economist, the student, and the man of business, it is impossible to overrate."-Economist.
