EXPLANATORY NOTE. Column 1 of the table following includes, with the exceptions explained by foot-notes, roads making operating reports only, filed in time for use through all of the tables; for particulars concerning the plan of arrangement of the roads, please see page 27. The use of "miscellaneous" in the boxing of this table requires a word of explanation. In column 6, under "Earnings arising from passenger service," it covers, specifically, amounts appearing in the annual reports against "Extra baggage and storage," and "Other items;" similarly in column 13, under "Earnings arising from freight service," it includes the amounts reported against "Other items." In its use in column 16, it embraces all of the amounts above referred to, together with the total of "Other earnings from operation," as returned in the annual reports, exclusive of any trackage rights items known to the Office as such; these last are given under " Rentals," column 22, Table III-B. Further remarks pertaining to Table III-A and B may be found on pages 8, 16, and 17, the last-named page giving a "Summary of Earnings and Income," which includes, among other items from Table IIIA, a separate statement of the gross amount of "Other earnings from operation."
