place both members of a couplet on the fame line, and not the first above the fecond, as we do: a Perfian would write the following verses in this order,

With ravished cars

Affumes the god,

The monarch bears,

Affects to nod.

It must be confeffed that this irregularity in writing, joined to the confufion of the diacritical points, which are often placed at random, and fometimes omitted, makes it very difficult to read the Perfian manufcripts, till the language becomes familiar to us; but this difficulty, like all others in the world, will be infenfibly furmounted by the habit of industry and perfeverance, without which no great defign was ever accomplished.

SHE KESTE H.

In this inelegant hand all order and analogy are neg

lected; the points which distinguish from ,

&c. are for the most part

omitted, and these feven letters, 1, 0, D, J, j, j, 99

are connected with thofe that follow them in a moft irregular manner. This is, certainly, a confiderable difficulty, which must be furmounted before the learner can translate an Indian letter: but I am perfuaded, that those who chiefly complain of it have another difficulty ftill greater, which is their imperfect knowledge of the language.

The diftinguished patronage under which this great work appears,
makes any farther recommendation of it unneceffary; the protection

that they confider it as extremely ferviceable to them in their tranfac-
tions and correspondence with the powers of Afia.

As the great improvements to this dictionary, particularly the English tranflation, and the addition of the Portuguese, must render it peculiarly useful to the gentlemen in the fervice of the Eaft India Company, it is hoped they will, without delay, embrace this opportunity of poffeffing a work fo long wifhed for, and fo compleatly calculated to facilitate the study of the Perfian language; efpecially as very few copies will be printed that are not fubfcribed for: it will therefore be proper for thofe gentlemen in India, who wish to encourage this undertaking, either to fubfcribe to the friends of the Editors in the different prefidencies, who are poffeffed of proper receipts, or to tranfmit their orders immediately to England.
