Do good to them that hate you, bless them that curse you, and pray for them that despitefully use you and persecute you. Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing, but contrariwise blessing.

If ye do good to them that do good to you, what thank have ye? For sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But do ye good and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest. For he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

tell him his fault between thee and him alone; if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother: but if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established; and if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the Church, but if he neglect to hear the Church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

MERCY AND COMPASSION.

2 Thus speaketh the Lord of Hosts, saying, Show mercy and compassion every man to his brother.

3 Be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another; love as brethren; be pitiful; be courteous. * Be ye merciful, as your Father also is merciful. 5 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

6 Comfort the feeble-minded, support the weak, be patient towards all men, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love.

'We that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

Pure religion is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction.

9 Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy: but he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath showed no mercy.

• The merciful man doth good unto his own soul: but he that is cruel, troubleth his own flesh; and he that is glad at calamities, shall not be unpunished.
