altar, ignorantly pretended to be by a mysterious transubstantiation, converted into the renewed oblation of the very body and blood of Christ himself. The one baptism, which makes us members of Christ's body, and is, therefore, essential to salvation, is not the administration of water to the flesh, by the hand of man; but the application of the blood of sprinkling to the conscience, by the power of the Holy Spirit, who then makes the body his temple, that he may purify it for God's service, while he raises the soul from glory to glory, in transforming it into the image of Christ. And when the Saviour established the ritual commemoration of his death, he gave it to his disciples in general, in their incorporate capacity, as churches, to observe; that by its universal and popular celebration, they might, wherever but two or three of them should be found, show forth his death till he come.
