EPILOGU E.

Written by WILLIAM BOLLAND, Esq.

Spoken by MR. WHEELWRIGHT.

YOU, who fo oft before, affembled here,

In Pity's caufe have fhed the facred tear,
With ready hands bestow'd the kind relief,
And fhar'd your comforts with the fons of Grief;
You, well I know, your charity to raise,
No beggar's cant require, no courtier's phrase..
In lib'ral minds unvarnish'd truths prevail,
Beyond fictitious mis'ry's artful tale:

Proud of the task, to my poor skill confign'd,
To night I plead the caufe of injur❜d Mind:
Of Mind, whofe bright and heav'n aspiring flame
Is doom'd to languish in its earthly frame;
Extinct its blaze, and chill'd its genial glow,
The sport of Envy, and the prey of Woe!
Hope fwells my bofom :-On each face I read
The claims of ftarving Genius must fucceed.

Long had our Ifle, for virtuous deeds renown'd,
Awak'd the wonder of the nations round;
Astonish'd travellers admir'd, and prais'd
The fumptuous palaces, by Pity rais❜d.
By wounds difabled, in the battle's rage,
Or worn by toil and fast approaching age,
The foldier bids adieu to worldly ftrife,
'Mid CHELSEA's groves to pafs the eve of life.
When crown'd with glory, BRITAIN's fleets restore
The fons of Valor to their native fhore,

The

The hardy vet'ran views with fond delight
The tow'rs of GREENWICH bursting on his fight.
Not fuch the fcholar's fate!-No fpacious dome
Supplied the child of Science with a home;
Tho' fraught with genius, twas his hapless lot
To toil for empty praise and be forgot!
To ftarve in fecret, or be doom'd to dwell
Th' imprifon'd tenant of the gloomy cell;
Till, prefs'd by ills, too great for man to bear,
He funk at laft the victim of despair!
Ah! there, methinks with these affrighted eyes,
I fee the fhade of famifh'd OTWAY rife!
Immortal OTWAY! darling fon of Fame!
At once a nation's glory, and her shame !—
Hark! 'tis the plaintive sound of woe I hear,
The groans of death now vibrate in my ear;
Thy fpirit, SAVAGE, from the dungeon calls,
And screams of forrow shake the folid walls!
All's hush'd-'tis past-th' indignant foul is fled:
The poet's free, he numbers with the dead!-
Still, ftill the fiends their magic spells renew,
Oh hide the horrid vision from my view !
Mifguided youth, the rash design forego!
Swift from thine impious hand the poison throw !
Bear, bear, thy fate, till heav'n demands thy breath,
Drink not!-The phial's drugg'd with double death!
'Tis done!-The fearching fires the vitals gain,
And ev'ry finew writhes convuls'd with pain
Life can no more fuftain th' unequal fight;
He dies!-Thy glory, BRISTOL, fets in night!

Bleft be the man, who first, in Learning's aid,
Stretch'd his firm arm to fave the fainting maid:
Rais'd her pale form, upheld her drooping head,
Gave, what the world denied, a little bread!
Whofe comprehenfive mind, with nobleft aim,
To make his bounty lafting as his fame,

Firft form'd the gen'rous plan, in whofe fupport,
I come this night your charity to court.
Touch'd by that talisman, imperial gold,
The prison gates with eager haste unfold:
Still is the watchful Cerberus of the law,
And learned Mis'ry quits her bed of straw;
To light and joy reftor'd, the Nymph pursues
Her fav'rite toil, her wonted task renews;
Roves thro' the fields of Fancy unconfin'd;
(Freedom alone gives energy to mind;)

Safe from their malice, fcorns the frowns of men,
And rescued GENIUS is herself again.
