S. Low

If only for the peculiarity of an unusual character, the career of Wharton is an interesting study. Gifted with many admirable qualities, and attempting much, he yet accomplished nothing, and only brought upon himself the ridicule of his contemporaries and the ignominy of historians. He was the patron of Young, the friend of Pope, and the friend of the famous Lady Mary Wortley Montague. Mr. Robinson points out that all his failures may be traced to the lack of that humble virtueprudence.

I intend to show that he was himself a master actor on important occasions, and an artist in histrionic effects." Pp. 119-122 contain a long list of authorities on Napoleon and his career.
