Mr. Whibley's heroes are the cutpurses, thieves, and highwaymen of the seventeenth century. Each of these he enshrines in a Lamb-like essay, and introduces the whole with a dissertation on scoundrels and scoundrelism, with the intention of showing the more heroic side of the spirit which moves to outlawry. Largely the essays are serio-comic, with yet a plea which has an appealing raison-d'être.
