V 44458 pp. (Library of Early English Writers.) Dy. 8vo., 1896, IOS. 6d. SONNENS The chief authority for Rolle's Life is to be found in a Vita in the lessons of t "Officium de S. Ricardo" (ed. Perry), and in Brebiarum eccl - Ebor (II. 188 Surtees Society). He was much influenced by the teachings of Duns Scotus, a although he studied for a time at Oxford, he left that university to lead the hermit life, and to realise in himself the mystic truths he had elaborated from his ow religious instincts. The highest ideal of life to him was the mystic and contemplativ which he attained by passing through the stages of "purificatio" or "purgatio "illuminatio," or the insight into the reality of the love of God, and "contemplatio or sight," when man sees into heaven with his ghostly eye." His early worl were written in Latin; later he composed in rhymed verse. All are emotion interpretations of the Scriptures. He represents the rebound to emotionalism, whic the logical teachings of Duns Scotus made possible. His characteristics are originali and the inspirations of genius. The introduction to the present edition of Rolle's works contains an exhaustiv summary of his life and teachings, as well as a list of all the works Mr. C. Horstma has been able to trace in the libraries of Oxford, Cambridge and London. 3648 Rothwell, Richard P., ed.-The mineral industry: its statistics, techn 3649 Royal Science Reader, III. 177 pp. Illus.
