J. MURRAY Mrs. Rhys Davids has practically written this book herself. With the exception of his lectures on psychology, the late Professor Robertson left neither copies of his lectures nor notes of his teaching. Mrs. Rhys Davids has had the assistance of past students who furnished her with their notes taken while the lectures were being delivered. The lecture on the growth of the mind, however, has been copied verbatim from a bundle of the author's notes. The present volume contains notes of 36 lectures, which Professor Robertson gave while occupying the Grote Chair, and as far as possible these
have been reprinted in the author's own words. 3643* Robinson, C. H.-Specimens of Hausa literature. 20 + 112 pp. Facsimiles. Cr. 4to, 1896, cloth, ios. ; without facsimiles, 5s.

FISHER UNWIN 3647* Rolle of Hampole, Richard - Works. Edited by C. Horstman. Vol. 2. 44 + 458 pp. (Library of Early English Writers.) Dy. 8vo., 1896, cloth,
SONNENSCHEIN The chief authority for Rolle's Life is to be found in a Vita in the lessons of the “Officium de S. Ricardo" (ed. Perry), and in Brebiarum eccl - Ebor (II. 1882, Surtees Society). He was much influenced by the teachings of Duns Scotus, and although he studied for a time at Oxford, he left that university to lead the hermit's life, and to realise in himself the mystic truths he had elaborated from his own religious instincts. The highest ideal of life to him was the mystic and contemplative, which he attained by passing through the stages of “purificatio ” or “ purgatio," “illuminatio," or the insight into the reality of the love of God, and “contemplatio " or “ sight," when man “sees into heaven with his ghostly eye." His early works were written in Latin ; later he composed in rhymed verse. All are emotional interpretations of the Scriptures. He represents the rebound to emotionalism, which the logical teachings of Duns Scotus made possible. His characteristics are originality and the inspirations of genius.
The introduction to the present edition of Rolle's works contains an exhaustive summary of his life and teachings, as well as a list of all the works Mr. C. Horstman
has been able to trace in the libraries of Oxford, Cambridge and London. 3648 Rothwell, Richard P., ed.—The mineral industry: its statistics, technology
