A WRITER Whom lofty sentiments, consciousness of genuine power, studious habits and strenuous efforts have raised to the level of our most distinguished poets; a dramatist of the highest order, who has attempted with equal success both tragedy and comedy, and whose popularity has been due to sterling merit, not to fashion or fits of enthusiasm ; a candid mind that loved truth for its own sake; a character universally esteemed, honest and independent: such was M. Ponsard. If we are to judge authors by the test that, to be great, they must bestow benefits, we are bound to rank him among those who have done good without any admixture of evil, and therefore among the very first.

François Ponsard was born at Vienne, a small town in Dauphiné, in 1814. He was educated partly in
