An early pilgrim thus I'll come,
With Magdalen, to find

In fighs and tears my Saviour's tomb,
And there refresh my mind."
My tears upon his grave fhall flow,
My fighs the garden fill:
Then at his feet myself I'll throw,

And there I'll feek his will.
JESUS! in thy bleft fteps I'll tread,
And haunt thee thro' thy ways;
I'll mourn, and never ceafe to plead,
"Till I'm reftor'd to grace.
Great conqueror of death thy fire.
Does fuch fweet flames excite,
That firft it raifes the defire,

Then fills it with delight.

Thy quick'ning prefence fhine fo clear, Thro' ev'ry fenfe and way;

That fouls, who once have feen thee near,
See all things elfe decay.

Come then dear Lord poffefs my herrt,
And chafe the fhades of night;
Come pierce it with thy flaming dart,
And ever fhining light.

Then I'll for ever JESUS fing,

And with the bleff'd rejoice; Then all the vaulted tow'rs fhall ring, And echoing hearts and voices fing, And ftill repeat rejoice.

A Prayer compofed by St. Auguftin, and recommended to the devotion of all Chriftians, by Pope Urban VIII.

Ante oculos tuos, Domine, &c.

O Lord, we bring our fins, and with them compare the stripes we have received.

If we weigh the evil we have done, we find what we fuffer to be much less than what we deserve.

3

What we have committed, does far outweigh what we endure."

We feel the punishment of fin and yet we turn not from our wilfulness in finning.

Our weakness faints under thy fcourges; but our perverfenefs is ftill the fame.

Our difeafed mind is racked with pain: and our neck is as ftiff as ever.

Our life is fpent in fighs and grief; but in our actions we are not reformed.

If thou expecteft our amendment, we grow no better; if thou takeft revenge, we are not able to fubfift.

When we are chaftifed, we acknowledge what we have done; but when thy vifitation is over, we forget what we wept for.

If thou ftretcheft out thy hand, we promife duty, if thou fufpendeft thy fword, we keep not our promife.

If thou ftrikeft, we cry for pardon; and if thou pardoneft, we provoke thee again to ftrike.

Here, O Lord, are thy criminals, confeffing their guilt; we know, that unless thou forgive, thou mayeft juftly deftroy us.

Grant without merit, what we afk, O Almighty Father; who out of nothing, didft create us to afk thee: Through Chrift our Lord. Amen.

The Anthem.

We wait in expectation of our Saviour's coming, who will reform our frail bodies, according to the model of his glorious body. Verf. Behold, the God of heaven is our Redeemer.

Refp. In him without fear, will we put our

truft.

The Prayer.

Lmighty God, who for the redemption of mankind, didft fend thy only Son, to take our flesh, and fuffer death on the crofs, we humbly pray that as our Saviour has left to us here the example of his patience, he would vouchfafe to make us hereafter partakers of his glory: Who liveth and reigneth one God, with thee and the Holy Ghoft, for ever and ever. Amen.

An Anthem and prayer in bononr of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to be faid in time of Plague.

H

Eav'n's brighteft ftar thy influence fhed:
Who with thy virgin breast,

Thy Son, heaven's fov'reign Maker fed,
That heal'd our nature's peft.
O thou aufpicious ftar, reftrain
The ftars contagious ill;

Whofe baleful frown portends our bane,
To fcourge our ulcer'd will.
Star of the fea receive our vows,
From plague thy fuppliants free:
Thy Son will not thy pray'rs refuse,
So much he honours thee.

A virgin mother, and a fruitful maid

For finners pleads; O Lord, vouchsafe thy aid.

V. Pray for us, holy mother of God.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Chrift.

Let us Pray.

God of mercy, God of pity, God of pardon, who hadft compaffion on the affliction of thy people, and commandedst the angel to reftrain his hand; we beseech thee, for the love of that glorious ftar, whofe precious breafts (against the venom of our fins) thou didft fweetly fuck: Grant us the affiftance of thy grace, that we may be

preferved from all plague and unprovided death by thee, O fweet Jefus Chrift, king. of glory: Who with the Father, and the Holy Ghoft, liveft and reigneft, world without end. Amen.
