therefore, when they had crucified him, took his garments (and they made four parts, to every foldier a part). and his coat was without feam, wrought from the top throughout. They faid therefore one to another, Let us not cut it, but let us caft lots for it, whofe it shall be; that the Scripture might be fufilled, faying, They have parted my garments among them, and for my vefture they have caft lots. And the foldiers did these things. And there ftood befide the crofs of Jefus, his mother, and his mother's fifter, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen. When Jefus therefore had feen his mother, and the difciple standing whom he loved, he fays to his mother, Woman, behold thy Son. After that, he says to the difciple, Behold thy Mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own. Afterward Jefus knowing, that all things were now finished; that the fcripture might be fulfilled, he says, I thirst. A veffel therefore ftood there, full of vinegar; and they putting a fpunge full of vinegar about hyffop, offered it to his mouth: Jefus therefore, having taken the vinegar, faid, It is finished, and bowing his head, HE GAVE UP THE GHOST. The Jews therefore, (because it was the parafceve) that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that was a great Sabbathday) they defired Pilate, that their legs might be broken, and they might be taken away. The foldiers therefore came; and of

the first they broke the legs, and of the other that was crucified with him. But being come to Jefus, when they faw that he was dead, they did not break his legs; but one of the foldiers, with a fpear, opened his fide, and immediately iffued forth blood and water. And he that faw it, has given testimony; and his teftimony is true. And he knows that he fays true, that you also may believe. For these things were done that the fcripture might be fulfilled; You fhall not break a bone of him. And again another fcripture fays, They fhall look on him. whom they pierced.

And after these things Jofeph of Arimathea (because he was a difciple of Jefus, but fecret, for fear of the Jews) defired Pilate, that he might take away the body of Jefus : And Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took away the body of Jefus. Nicodemus alfo came, he that at the first came to Jefus by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. They took therefore the body of Jefus, and bound it in linen clothes, with the fpices, as the manner is with the Jews to bury. And there was in the place, where he was crucified, a garden, and in the garden a new monument, wherein no man yet had been laid there therefore, because of the parafceve of the Jews, they laid Jefus, because the monument was hard by.

THE HYMN AT EVEN-SONG.

Creator alme Siderum.

REATOR of the stars above;

Your early fuft rings now begin
To fave the world involv'd in fin,
And from the Virgin's facred womb
Continue to the cross and tomb.

The voice no fooner founds the fame
Of the Almighty Jefu's name,
But heav'n and hell at once agree
And jointly bend their trembling knee.

Vouchfafe, O fov'reign judge, we pray, That at the laft accounting day

Our foe may not prevail, or we
Give up the fouls were made for thee.

May each fucceeding age proclaim
Thy glory and eternal fame;
And fing with the celestial hoft,
The Father, Son, and Holy Ghoft.

The Son of God begins his way,

TH

To refcue at his wond'rous birth
A world enflav'd to fin and earth.
Our minds, O God, with light infpire,
And warm our hearts with heav'nly fire,
Till flaming with feraphic love,
We relish only things above.

That at the great and dreadful day, When heav'n and hell contend for prey; And Chrift our judge appoints for this Damnation, and for t' other bliss.

Our lot with theirs mayn't be the fame Who feed an unconfuming flanie, But rather grant that we may fee Thy heav'nly face eternally.

To God the Father and the Son,

And holy Spirit, three in one,
Be endless glory as before
The world began, fo overmore.

The HYMN at Lauds.

In clara Vox redarguit.

A Heavenly

voice and early ray
Now chide the lazy night away ;
With watchful hearts and waking eyes
Behold the Sun of juftice rise.

O rifing fun, attract our mind
Like morning dew from earth refin'd;
That we may learn with thee to rife,
And pay our morning facrifice.

Behold, the lamb is fent to pay
The debt our nature can't defray:
May all, at leaft, compound th' arrears
With humbled hearts and grateful tears.
That when he late returns in ire,
To judge the trembling world by fire;
We may escape the judge, and find
A God, a Father, and a friend.

May each fucceeding age. &c. 361.
