Devout Prayers, or Meditations upon the Paffion of our Lord.

A Prayer of the particular Articles of the PASSION.

LORD God, who for the redemption of the world vouchfafeft to be born, to be circumcifed, to be reprobated by the Jews, betrayed with a kifs, to be bound like a malefactor, and like an innocent lamb to be led to flaughter, to be ignominioufly brought before Annas, Caiphas, Pilate, and Herod; to be accufed by falfe witneffes, fcourged with whips, buffeted, defiled with fpittle, crowned with thorns, ftripped of thy clothes, faftened to the cross, placed between two thieves, to have vinegar and gall given thee to drink, to have thy fide pierced thro' with a fpear: Thou, O Lord, by these most grievous pains, which I though unworthy, commemorate, and by thy facred death and paffion, free me from the pains of hell, and conduct me whither thy mercy did conduct the good thief crucified with thee: Who together with the Father and holy Ghoft, liveft and reigneft for ever.

Lord Jefus Chrift, to whofe power all things fubmit, and whofe will no one

can refift; who vouchfafed'ft to be born, to die, and to rise again: By the mystery of thy moft facred body, by thy five wounds, and by the effufion of thy moft precious blood, have mercy on us, as thou knowest it to be neceffary for our fouls and bodies: Deliver us from the temptations of the devil, and from all things, in which thou knoweft us to be diftreffed; keep and ftrengthen us to the end in thy fervice, and give us true amendment, time of true repentance, and forgivenefs of all our fins after death: Make us brethren, fisters, friends and enemies, to love one another; and with all faints to rejoice without end in thy kingdom: who liveft and reigneft, &c.

A Prayer to the Wounds of Chrift.

Befeech thee, O Lord Jefus by thofe thy

upon the cross for our falvation, and out of which flowed that precious blood, wherewith we are redeemed; wound this my finful foul, for which thou also vouchsafed'ft to die ; wound it with the fire of thy abundant charity, pierce my heart with thy love, that my foul may fay to thee, I am wounded with thy charity, in fuch fort, that from the fame wound of thy love, moft abundant tears may flow from me day and night, Strike, O Lord, ftrike I beseech thee, this my hard heart, with thy holy and forcible love, and pierce it

more deeply into the inner parts, with thy mighty force: Who liveft and reigneft, world without end. Amen.

Divine Meditation upon the Paffion of Chrift.

L.Lord Jefus Chrift, I adore thee hanging on the cross, wearing a crown of thorns on thy head; I befeech thee, that thy crofs may deliver me from the striking angel. Amen.

Our Father. Hail Mary.

II. O Lord Jefus Chrift, I adore thee wounded upon the crofs, to whom gall and vinegar was given to drink: I beseech thee, that thy wounds may be a remedy to my foul. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary.

III. O Lord Jefus Chrift, I beseech thee, for that bitternefs, which thou endured'ft upon the crois, for me a moft wretched finner, especially at that hour, when thy moft generous foul departed from thy bleffed body, have mercy on my foul, at its departure, and bring it to life everlasting. men.

Our Father. Hail Mary.

IV. O Lord Jefus Chrift, adore thee defcending to hell, and delivering the captive fouls: befeech thee, fuffer me not to enter in thither. Amen.

Our Father. Hail Mary.

.. VI. O Lord Jefus Chrift, I adore thee rifing from the dead, afcending to heaven, and

fitting at the right hand of thy Father. I beseech thee, that I may deferve to follow thee thither, and to be prefented.

Our Father. Hail Mary.

Amen.

VII. O Lord Jefus Chrift, the good fhepherd; preferve the juft, juftify finners, have mercy on all the faithful, and be merciful to me a finner. Amen.

Of the feven Words which Chrift fpoke banging on the Crofs.

A Prayer.

Lord Jefus Chrift, Son of the living God, who hanging on the cross, faid'ft, Father forgive them, for they know not what they do: Grant, that I, for the love of thee, may pardon all that do evil to me. Thou, who faid'ft to the thief, This day thou fhalt be with me in paradife: Grant me fo to live, that at the hour of my death, thou mayeft say to me, This day fhalt thou be with me in paradife. Thou who faid'ft to thy mother, O woman behold thy Son; and forthwith to thy difciple, Behold thy mother. Grant that thy love and true charity may affociate me to thy mother. Thou, who faideft, Eli, Eli, lamafabathani, that is to fay, My God, my God, why haft thou forsaken me? Grant me to fay, in all my tribulation and anguish, my Father, my Lord, have mercy on me a finner, and help me, my King, and my God, who didft redeem me with thy precious blood. Thou, who faid'ft, I thirst: Grant, that I may always thirft after thee, the FounDd

tain of the living water. Thou, who faid'ft, Father, into thy hands I commend my Spirit: receive me returning to thee, Thou, who faid'ft, It is finished: Grant I may deserve to hear that moft sweet invitation of thine, to wit, Come my Love, my Dear, my Spouse, come, that thou mayeft afcend with me to feast, to rejoice, and dwell with my angels and faints in my kingdom. world without end. A A prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Beseech thee, O holy Mary, mother of God moft full of pity, the daughter of the highest King, mother most glorious, mother of orphans, the comfort of the afflicted, the way of them that go aftray, the fafety of all that truft in thee, a virgin before child-bearing, a virgin in child-bearing, and a virgin after child-bearing, the fountain of mercy, the fountain of health and grace, the fountain of comfort and pardon, the fountain of piety and joy, the fountain of life and forgiveness: By that holy and unspeakable gladnefs, by which the Spirit did rejoice at that hour, wherein the Son of God was by the angel Gabriel declared to thee, and conceived: By that holy, unspeakable humility, in which thou didst anfwer the archangel Gabriel, Behold the handmaid of our Lord, be it to me according to thy word: By that divine mystery, which the Holy Ghoft did then work in thee: by that ununfpeakable grace, pity, mercy, love and humility, by which thy Son, our Lord Jefus
