FASHIONS

For JANUARY, 1809.

EXPLANATION OF THE PRINTS OF FASHION.

ENGLISH COSTUME.

No. 1.-EVENING DRESS.

A white under-dress of fine India muslin, || white sarsnet, or satin; with laced stomacher, and high antique frill. Andalusian vest, of purple, or light amber crape, net, or leno; vandyked all round in a shaded border of che. nille, tastefully contrasted. Short sleeves, finished with the same. A broad Grecian belt of folded silk; with rich gold, or silver, embossed clasp, similar to those which confine the robe in two separate distances down the front. Hair in disheveled curls, turned up behind with gold, silver, or pearl comb. Necklace, earrings, and bracelets of pearl. White satin shoes, with silver or gold embroidered toes. French kid gloves, and fan of spangled

crape,

No. 2.-A WALKING DRESS.

A round French coat, or gown of scarlet Merino cloth, with high collar, and deep pellerine cape. Bonnet and shoes en suite. Hair curled in front, and divided on the forehead. York tan, or pale Limerick gloves. This dress is sometimes embellished with a trimming of spotted ermine, which is certainly a softening and becoming relief.

No. 3.-CARRIAGE COSTUME.

A round robe, with short train and long sleeves, of fine grey cloth, shawl muslin, or velvet. A Spanish cape, or pellerine of the same. Each extremity bordered with a narrow crimson velvet, or chenille. A helmet bonnet of crimson velvet, ornamented with narrow sable, or other well-contrasted fur. Earrings of Cornelian, or coral. Slippers of crimson velvet, with black rosets. Gloves, pale stone-coloured kid, or York tan. No. XXXIX. Vol. V.

No. 4.-CARRIAGE COSTUME.

A round high morning robe, of muslin or cambric; with long sleeves, worn quite plain, or otherwise ornamented with lace or needlework. A Spanish mantle, or cloak of purple, green, or flame-coloured cloth, lined and trim med with skin, with high collars, and Maltese hood, or unella-the edges finished with gold binding. This singular article, is turned up in front, so as to exhibit the hair; which is disposed in irregular waves, or curls on the forebead. Slippers or half-boots, of the same material as the cloak. Kid gloves, a light brown, or pale lead-colour.

ON THE MOST ELEGANT
FASHIONS FOR THE SEASON.

WHATEVER difficulty we may find from the great variety which fashion continually introduces, there can be none at this moment in recommending articles of a seasonable appropriation The present determined severity of the weather will forcibly appeal to the senses, and lead those females (who would preserve that health without which there is no beauty) to shelter themselves from the piercing attacks of the cold, by a judicious adoption of her bosom friend.-This article does not now (as formerly) consist in an insignificant piece of fur, just fitted to the chest; but in conformity to that enlarged sense, which its comprehensive name implies, affords a more extensive protection in the sensible underwrap of fleecy-hosery, or lamb's-wool in the Russian pelisse, of purple or crimson velvet, lined with the softest skin; in long Grecian mantles wadded and lined with silk, and trimmed with spotted ermine, or other rich ur; 00
