preferring that which is permanent to that which is transitory. Thus did the great and good Wilberforce; and in his old age, and at a time, too, when he had lost the bulk of his property, after recovering from sickness, he wrote, "I cannot tell why the Lord has permitted me to recover, unless it be to shew the world that a man can be as happy without a fortune as with one." Yes! as happy, if the Divine favor be enjoyed, for then time's changes and life's vicissitudes draw the soul nearer God and heaven. And when the morning of life has been well spent, we may expect to see its evening gilded with sunshine, and blessed with repose. For there will then be that fountain of joy springing up in the mind to which Solomon alludes, when he says, "A good man shall be satisfied from himself." Yes! his conscience has peace through a Saviour's blood, and his dearest hopes are realized. Moreover, the serenity of his mind, like the morning light, cheers all who come within the circle of his influence. And though that influence may, to our view, seem confined within the narrow

limits of home, still none can tell how widely and beneficially it operates. For the good man forms a part of that "salt" which preserves the world from corruption-whilst the pleasures which here delight him shall know neither diminution nor decay. They shall attend his steps to the last moment of his earthly pilgrimage, and at its close accompany his undying spirit to a world where youth is renewed, and increase his happiness in a region where joy never languishes, where man never complains

of age.

With songs let us follow his flight,

And mount with his spirit above,
Escaped to the mansions of light,-

And lodged in the Eden of love.

Therefore, ye who are young, whilst ye prize youthful days, spend them well; and thus make the season of youth a time of improvement and happiness, as well as the harbinger of future bliss. Hereafter, it will give a peace, far exceeding in value any earthly treasure, if amidst all that at present awakens your energy, and occupies your hands, you are mindful of the

wise man's admonition, "Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth; while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.”
