INDEX

TO MATTERS OF PERMANENT INTEREST

IN THE JOURNALS OF THE DIOCESE OF CONNECTICUT,

1792-1897.

PREPARED BY THE REGISTRAR.

Prefatory Note on Conventions and Journals.

The original publication of the Journals of the Convention of the Diocese of Connecticut before 1820 was in ten pamphlets, as follows (the regular Convention was held each year on the first Wednesday of June):

(1) 1792, 1793, 1794, 1795; (2) 1796 special May, 1796, 1796 adj. Oct., 1797, 1797 special Oct., 1798, 1799, 1800, 1801, 1802 special Apr.; (3) 1802, 1802 adj. Oct., 1803; (4) 1804, 1805, 1806, 1806 adj. Oct., 1807; (5) 1808, 1809, 1810, 1810 adj Oct.; (6) 1811, 1812, 1813; (7) 1813 special Aug., 1813 adj. Nov., 1814, 1814 adj. Oct., 1815, 1816, 1816 special Oct.; (8) 1817; (9) 1818, 1819; (10) 1819 special Oct. These were reprinted in one volume in 1842, together with Bishop Seabury's first charge in 1785 and a list of Ordinations to 1842.

Beginning with 1820, the Journals of the Conventions have been printed in separate pamphlets or volumes, except those for 1822, 1823, and 1824, which were printed together, and those for the attempted Conventions of 1832 and 1833, which form one thin pamphlet. There have been no special or adjourned Conventions since 1820; but the time of the annual meeting having been changed at the June Convention in 1832, the next regular meeting was appointed for October of the same year. At this second Convention of 1832 there was no quorum present, and apparently none was expected; and at the Convention of 1833, which was held in Norwich, there was also no quorum present, so that no business was transacted in Convention between June 1832 and October 1834.

In the 1842 reprint of the early Journals, the Convention of June 1792 is called the "Tenth Annual Convention," and the following annual Conventions are numbered in order from it. It was assumed that Bishop Seabury's election in 1783 was at the first Convention, and that there had been a Convention in each succeeding year, but that the records of these nine Conventions had been lost. In fact, there was no Convention, in the sense

of a meeting of the Clergy and the Laity with their Bishop, before 1792, when it was necessary that both Clergy and Laity should meet to elect deputies of both orders to the General Convention of that year. The Clergy had been in the habit of meeting annually in voluntary Convocations (sometimes indeed called Conventions), the first of which, so far as is known, was in 1739. These Convocations were continued with great regularity, once or twice a year, for a long time after Conventions began to be held; they practically ceased in 1830, though there were three of later date. The records of Convocations from 1790 to 1848, with one brief lacuna, are in existence, but have never been printed. Many matters of great importance in the history of the Diocese were transacted at these meetings of the Clergy, of which no record appears in the Journals of the Conventions. Most of these are noticed in Dr. Beardsley's History of the Church in Connecticut; but it is much to be desired that the records of Convocation should be printed. It may be added that there was a meeting of lay delegates in 1788, to devise means for the support of the Bishop.

In the following Index, or table of matters of permanent interest contained in the Journals of Convention, the reference is to year and page. For the years before 1820 the page reference is to the reprint, in which the Journals are paged consecutively.
