of your body; for since our very nature affects us, it is not wonderful if we often and eagerly sin.

· In the third and last place, it is necessary to subject to examination those faults more especially which have perchance been contracted by you in the society of wicked men, and from the contagion of the world ; for these commonly are the origin of all evil and misery.

“ These are the things, my Brother, concerning which I have thought it needful to forewarn you, that hereafter you may, when next I come to visit

receive [if you

humbly and heartily desire it] the absolution of the Church, and the Supper of the Lord ; in the meantime, if any difficulty should occur to you, which occasions either scruple or heavy disquietude, or if in any other matter you need my counsel, I am ready to discharge my office, and to be of the utmost service in my power to your soul's health.”

“Pardon me, my friend, and impute it to Second Form. the nature of the pastoral office, if I seem to deal with you a little more severely than is usual, or than the manners of the present day admit, or than you yourself perhaps expect from me.

There is an unhappiness natural to the human race which leads them always to countenance and approve their actions, whether they be good or otherwise; many are the flatterers of others, but all are flatterers of themselves, yet this fault would comparatively be more tolerable in the midst of life, over feasting and mirth; but, oh painful reflection ! when the last breath is about to expire, you will indeed easily perceive with how much danger to the soul either I may flatter you, or you may flatter yourself, if eternity be depending on that moment, and you will remember that you are then about to render a strict account for all the things you have done. Know, therefore, that he cannot stand before the awful tribunal of God, freed from the Divine sentence, who has led a cold and lifeless existence, without zeal and toil; nor

can the immense rewards of heaven be obtained by a little labour, nor any one hereafter enjoy the presence of God, who is not (as our Saviour expresses it) adorned like God with perfect righteousness. But you, in truth, my friend, unless I am deceived, can arrive at this state of perfection only by repentance, and that, at the same time, full and severe."

THE ORDER FOR THE

VISITATION OF THE SICK.

When any person is sick, notice shall be given thereof to

the Minister of the parish ; who, coming into the sick person's house, shall say,

PEACE be to this house, and to all that dwell in it.

When he cometh into the sick man's presence, he shall

say, kneeling down, Remember not, Lord, our iniquities, nor the iniquities of our forefathers: spare us, good Lord, spare thy people, whom thou hast redeemed with thy most precious blood, and be not angry with us for ever.

Answer. Spare us, good Lord.

Then the Minister shall say,

Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation ; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Minister. O Lord, save thy servant ;
Answer. Which putteth his trust in thee.
Minister. Send him help from thy holy place ;
Answer. And evermore mightily defend him.

Minister. Let the enemy have no advantage of him ;

Answer. Nor the wicked approach to hurt him.
Minister. Be unto him, O Lord, a strong tower,
Answer. From the face of his enemy.
