HO' Abundance of folid Particulars are naturally funk in the rapid Current of Time, while many less subftantial are floating upon the Surface, to the Hand of every ordinary Memorialist: And though fome fhining Circumftances, in the profperous Part of Sir Walter Ralegh's Life, have been darkened through Envy; as others, in the unfortunate Period, through Intereft, by the Age in which he lived; neverthelefs, his fingle Life may perhaps be found more fruitful of memorable Incidents, than many Hiftories of intire Ages: Infomuch, as I may be apprehenfive, with a late Collector of his Memoirs, "That the defcribing a Perfon of fo diffufive a "Praife, fo equally great in fo many different Parts ❝of Life, will be like attempting a Landfkip from a high Hill, where the Multiplicity and Extent "of the Profpects may rather diftract the Mind,
