PREFACE.

THE Conviction seems to be steadily gaining strength, that English teaching in secondary schools should include (1) reading and discussing selections from standard English authors, (2) constant practice in composition, (3) systematic correction of the pupil's work, and (4) the study of rhetoric for the purpose of cultivating the pupil's power of criticising and improving his own writing.

An ample number of standard works have been published in convenient form for school use, and the majority of English teachers are employing them in class work. For this reason the time allowed for the study of rhetoric has, in most schools, been much reduced. However, the study of rhetoric cannot be safely ignored; for in order to secure the greatest benefit from practice in composition and from the corrections of the teacher, the class must be made familiar with certain rules for avoiding errors in the use of language and for the improvement of style. As a matter of fact, rhetoric is now being taught to younger classes than ever before; and teachers of English seem to demand 541770
