MY DEAR SISTER,

WHEN travelling was recommended for

the recovery of my father's health, and he had indulgently selected me as the companion of his journey, I promised, as you know, both to him and you,, that I would from time to time give you an account of our progress, that you might accompany us on the map, with such observations as would strike a JUVENILE TOURIST like myself, and would be most likely to please and entertain you. My travels cannot be expected to possess the variety of those of young ROLANDO round the World, but the places I may chance to visit, are natu

rally so dear to every Briton, that my narrative cannot fail to interest your affections at least.

Though I address my letters to you, my dear Louisa, according to my engagement, I wish it to be understood, that they are intended for the perusal of the whole family. This is the more necessary, as my father has been advised to refrain from writing as much as possible; and while I consult his ease in carrying on this correspondence, I am sensible it will conduce to my own improvement.

The morning I left my native city of Oxford, was as fine as heart could wish; and as I ascended the hill which overlooks it from the south, I eyed its splendid towers, illumined by an early sun, with a melancholy pleasure, and thought on my beloved relations whom I was leaving behind. You have often admired with me the prospect of Oxford, from the road leading towards Bagley Wood; but admiration was now absorbed in warmer feel. ings; and till the last turret was lost to my
