Biographical Notices of Eminent Ministers of the Church of Scotland.

ROBERT TRAIL, MINISTER OF THE

GOSPEL, Edinburgh.

THIS good man was descended of an ancient family, who possessed the estate of Blebo in Fife. He was first minister of Ely, in the east of Fife, afterwards of Greyfriar's Church, Edinburgh, and was much distinguished for his fidelity and zeal in discharging the duties of his function. After the Restoration of Charles II. he suffered not a little in the cause of religion. He was one of a number of excellent ministers, who met in the house of Mr. Robert Simpson, August 23, 1660, to draw up a humble address and supplication to the king, a measure which the unfavourable aspect of ecclesiastical affairs led them to judge expedient, and which seemed to be the more necessary, in consequence of the suspicions they began to entertain respecting the conduct of Mr. James Sharp, their agent with the The Committee of Estates, who sat for the first time this very

day, having received information of the intended meeting of ministers, sent immediately some persons to seize their papers, and, without permitting them to be heard in their own defence, committed all who were present (except Mr. Hay of Craignethan, who happily escaped) to close prison in the castle of Edinburgh. In the draught of the supplication, they congratulate his majesty on his happy restoration to the throne of his ancestors, and on their unfeigned loyalty to his person and government, remind him of his engagements to maintain the interests of true religion, and offer up their earnest prayers to God, that his reign may be like those of David, Solomon, Jehoshaphat, and Hezekiah. This illegal and unprecedented step, the first act of the Committee of Estates, was a prelude to that horrid scene of arbitrary proceedings, oppression, and cruelty, which now began to open.
