of interest which attaches to the associations connected with the mighty river so ably brought before the visitor, there is much instruction to be derived from viewing this clever picture, which is, in fact, the bestpainted panorama of the day.

Mr. Burford has placed before the admirers of scenic splendour a view of the LAKES OF KILLARNEY, a part of the sister country so celebrated for the beauties of its scenery, that curiosity will tempt many to witness this panorama, the accuracy of which is highly to be commended.

THE POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTION deserves the support it meets with, were it merely on account of the unwearied exertions of the directors in their efforts to provide novelty of an edifying and entertaining kind. But, in addition, the variety and the nature of the subjects form reasons sufficiently attractive for a visit to this well-arranged gallery.

THE DERBY DAY.

Epsom races have so fallen in the present year that this periodical will be published before one of their two most important issues-the Oaks has been run for. This will account for my notice of that great popular meeting being confined to a brief allusion to one of its chief events. I hope that notice will be accepted as conceived in a fitting spirit I am putting it to paper while the tens of thousands who assembled to witness it are rushing townwards, past my window. The whirl of excitement is upon me; nevertheless, had I wasted the last four-andtwenty hours in silence and solitude, my conclusion would have been the same. Epsom never knew such a popular gala-it was more, it was a social wonder. Epsom never contemplated such a Derby-it was a burlesque upon the term. For that gathering of the élite of the three-year-old stock, a field of 24 ran: among them, and first favourites at short odds, being Bolingbroke and Mildew. The former, in palmy pride of place, was sent forth from one of the first stables at Newmarket, with the assurance that he was a courser of proved excellence; the latter with the results of a trial to introduce him to public favour, that would have been good enough to have beaten the Flying Dutchman in his best form. Voltigeur won by a length, a race whereof the first moiety was run at speed not good enough to put a fifty pound plate in action: Pitsford second. Bolingbroke I never saw even during its earlier part: Mildew was beaten the moment the pace became at all earnest. I close this sad epitome "more in sorrow than in anger," that the greatest race in the world should have been stained with instances of the most flagrant cajolery, or gross imbecility, that ever came under my observation since my acquaintance with the turf.
