No longer muft fhe ftay on board;

They kifs'd; fhe figh'd; he hung his head: Her leffening boat unwilling rows to land, Adieu! fhe cries; and wav'd her lily hand.

SONG 129.

Tune, He comes! he comes! the hero comes!

UNITE, unite, your voices raise;
Loud, loudly fing Free-Mafons' praise:
Spread far and wide their spotless fame,
And glory in the facred name.

Behold, behold, the upright band,
In Virtue's paths go hand in hand;
They fhun each ill, they do no wrong,
Strict honour does to them belong.

How juft, how juft, are all their ways,
Superior far to mortal praise;
Their worth description far exceeds,
For matchlefs are Free Mafons' deeds.

Go on, go on, ye just and true,
Still, ftill the fame bright paths purfue;
Th' admiring world fhall on ye gaze,
And friendship's altar ever blaze.

Begone, begone, fly difcord hence,
With party rage and infolence:

Sweet peace fhall blefs this happy band,
And freedom fmile throughout the land.

SONG 130..

us, kind Heav'n, what we request,

In Masonry let us be bleft;

Direct us to that happy place
Where Friendship fmiles in every face:

Where Freedom and fweet Innocence
Enlarge the mind and cheer the fenfe.

Where fcepter'd Reason, from her throne, Surveys the LODGE, and makes us one; And Harmony's delightful fway,

For ever sheds ambrofial day :

Where we bleft Eden's pleasure tafte,
Whilft balmy joys are our repaft.

No prying eye can view us here;
No fool or knave difturb our cheer:
Our well-form'd laws fet mankind free,
And give relief to Misery :

The poor, opprefs'd with woe and grief,
Gain from our bounteous hands relief.

Our LODGE the focial Virtues grace, And Wisdom's rules we fondly trace;

Whole Nature, open to our view, Points out the paths we should pursue. Let us fubfift in lafting peace, And may our happiness increase.

SONG 131.

Sung in Love IN A VLLLAGE.
HOPE! thou nurfe of young defire,
Fairy promifer of joy,
Painted vapour, glow-worm fire,
Tem'prate, fweet, that ne'er can cloy.

Hope thou earneft of delight,
Softeft foother of the mind,
Balmy cordial, profpect bright,
Sureft friend the wretched find.

Kind deceiver! flatter ftill,

Deal out pleasures unpoffeft; With thy dreams my fancy fill, And in wishes make me bleft.

SONG 132.

I AM a bachelor winfome,

A farmer by rank and degree,

And few I fee that's mair handfome,
At kirk or at market than me :
I'm outfide and infide in credit,
And frae ev'ry blemish I'm free;
I'm very well boarded and beded,
Yet I can get nane to tak' me.

I've courted baith Highlands and Lawlands,
When I a good bargain cou'd fee,
But there was nane that I cou'd fall on,
E'er faid fhe wou'd buckle wi' me:

A horfe to ride on when he's weary,
And cock wi' the best fhe can fee,
And then be ca'd Dauty and Deary;
What think you can ail her at me.

But, I have an offer to mak' her,
If that he will hearken to me,
Is, that I am willing to tak' her
Though cripple or blind e'er the be:
Let any one then write a billet,

And let her tranfmit it to me,

I hereby engage to fulfil it,
Of what kind foever it be.

But, cripple I am not, forfta' me,
What though boud-footed I be;
Nor blind have you reafon to ca' me,
What though I fee but wi' one eye:
Thefe forty years I've been neglected,
As you the truth o't may see,

Such offers fhould not be rejected,
Of what kind foever they be.

In Edinburgh speir for Jean Bladen,
A little below the Cross Key,
And at the fign of the Old Maiden,

There you will be fure to find me.
Bring wi' you the prieft o' the weddin',
That a' things juft finish'd may be,
And I'll fing a fang to the beddin';
And wha'll be fae merry as we.

SONG 133.

THE SOBER DRINKER.
Tune, Old Sir Symon the King.

COME, come, my hearts fo bold,
Let us be merry and wife ;

'Tis a very good proverb of old,
Sufpicion has double eyes.

Whatever we fay or do

Let's not drink to disturb the brain

Let's laugh for an hour or two,

But never get drunk again :

;

[ocr errors]

For much drink makes a man drunk,

And drunkenness makes a man dry,

And drowth will make a man fick,
And fickness you know makes usdie.
