Then homeward all take off their several way;
The youngling cottagers retire to rest; The parent-pair their secret homage pay,
And proffer up to Heaven the warm request, That He who stills the raven's clamorous nest,
And decks the lily fair in flowery pride, Would, in the way his wisdom sees the best,
For them and for their little ones provide; But chiefly in their hearts with
From scenes like these old Scotia’s grandeur springs,
That makes her loved at home, revered abroad. Princes and lords are but the breath of kings:
“ An honest man's the noblest work of God.” And certes, in fair Virtue's heavenly road,
The cottage leaves the palace far behind: What is a loruling's pomp? a cumbrous load,
Disguising oft the wretch of human kind, Studied in arts of hell, in wickedness refined !
O Scotia, my dear, my native soil,
For whom my warmest wish to Heaven is sent ! Long may thy hardy sons of rustic toil
Be blessed with health and peace, and sweet content! And, oh, may Heaven their simple lives prevent
From luxury's contagion, weak and vile ! Then, howe'er crowns and coronets be rent,
A virtuous populace may rise the while, And stand, a wall of fire, around their much-loved isle.
O Thou who poured the patriotic tide
That streamed through Wallace's undaunted heart, Who dared to nobly stem tyrannic pride,
Or nobly die, the second glorious part ! (The patriot's God peculiarly thou art,
His friend, inspirer, guardian, and reward :)
But still the patriot and the patriot-bard
TO A MOUNTAIN DAISY,
ON TURNING ONE DOWN WITH THE PLOW IN APRIL, 1786.
WEE, modest, crimson-tipped flower,
Thy slender stem:
Thou bonnie gem.
Alas! it's no thy neebor sweet,
Wi' speckled breast,
The purpling east.
Amid the storm;
Thy tender form.
O'clod or stane,
In humble guise;
And low thou lies !
And guileless trust; Till she, like thee, all soiled, is laid
Low i' the dust.
Such is the fate of simple bard
Of prudent lore,
And whelm him o'er.
Such fate to suffering worth is given,
To misery's brink;
He, ruined, sink.
Full on thy bloom,
Shall be thy doom!

TO MARY IN IIEAVEN.
Thou lingering star with lessening ray,
That lov'st to greet the early morn,
My Mary from my soul was torn.
Where is thy place of blissful rest ?
Hear’st thou the groans that rend his breast ?
Can I forget the hallowed grove,
To live one day of parting love?
Those records dear of transports past :
Ah, little thought we 'twas our last !
O’erhung with wild woods, thickening green;
Twined amorous round the raptured scene ;
The birds sang love on every spray ;
Proclaimed the speed of winged day.
And fondly broods with miser care:
As streams their channels deeper wear.
Where is thy place of blissful rest?
Hear’st thou the groans that rend his breast ?

CHARACTER OF JUNIUS.
WHERE, Mr. Speaker, shall we look for the origin of this relaxation of the laws and of all government ? How comes this Junius to have broken through the cobwebs of the law, and to range uncontrolled, unpunished, through the land ? The myrmidons of the court have been long, and are still, pursuing him in vain. They will not spend their time upon me or you: no! they disdain such vermin when the mighty boar of the forest, that has broken through all their toils, is before them. But what will all their efforts avail? No sooner has he wounded one than he lays down another dead at his feet. For my part, when I saw his attack upon the king, I own my blood ran cold. I thought he had ventured too far, and that there was an end of his triumphs. Not that he had not asserted many truths: yes, sir, there are in that composition many bold truths by which a wise prince might profit. But, whil" I expected from this daring flight his final ruin and fall, belold him rising still higher, and coming down souse upon both Houses of Parliament! Yes, he did make you his
