prophet Esajas : and, when he had opened the book, he
found the place where it was written the spirit of the Lord
is upon me,
because he hath anointed me to preach the gos-
pel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted,
to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight
to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised; to
preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the
book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down.
And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were
fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, this
day is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears. And all bear
him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which
proceeded out of his mouth.
Luke iv. 20, 32.-And he closed the book, and he gave it
again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all
them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
And he began to say unto them, this day is this Scripture
sulfilled in your ears. And all bare him witness, and won-
dered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his
mouth. And they said, is not this Joseph's son? And
he said unto them, ye will surely say unto me this
proverb, physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have
heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.
And he said, verily I say unto you, no prophet is
accepted in his own country.
But I tell you of a
truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias,
when the heaven was shut up three years and six months,
when great famine was throughout all the land; but unto
none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of
Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. And many lepers
were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and
none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.
And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these
things, were filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust him
out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill,
whereon their city was built, that they might cast him
down headlong. But be, passing through the midst of
them, went his way, and came down to Capernaum, a city
of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath days. And
they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was
Matt. iv. 12, 22.-Now, when Jesus had heard that John
was cast into prison he departed into Galilee ; and leaving
Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is up-
on the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Neptha-
lim: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by
Esaias the prophet, saying, the land of Zabulon, and
the land of Napthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond
Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; the people which sat in
darkness saw great light: and to them which sat in the
region and shadow of death light is sprung up. From
that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, repent: for
the kingdom of heaven is at hand. And Jesus walking
by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called
Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea :
for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, follow
me, and I will make you fishers of men.
straitway left their nets, and followed him. And going on
from hence, he saw two other brethren, James the son of
Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their
father, mending their nets; and he called them. And
they immediately left the ship and their father, and fol-
John ii. 1, 11.–And the third day there was a marriage in
Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there,
And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the
marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of
Jesus saith unto him, they have no wine. Jesus saith
unto her, woman, what have I to, do with thee? mine
hour is not yet come.
His motber saith unto the servants,
whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were
set there six water-pots of stone, after the manner of the
purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins
apiece. Jesus saith unto them fill the water-pots with
water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he
saith unto them, draw out now, and bear unto the go-
vernor of the feast.
And they bare it. When the
ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made
wine, and knew not whence it was, (but the servants
which drew the water knew) the governor of the feast
called the bridegroom, and saith unto him, every man at
the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men
have well drunk, then that which is worse : but thou hast
kept the good wine until now. This beginning of mira.
cles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth
his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
John ii. 13. 17,
-And the Jews passover was at hand;
And Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and found in the temple
those that sold oxen, and sheep, and doves, and the
changers of money, sitting: and when he had made a
scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the
temple, and the sheep, and the oxen: and poured out
the changers' money, and overthrew the tables : and said
unto them that sold doves, take these things hence;
make not my Father's house, a house of merchandize.
And his disciples remembered that it was written, the
zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
1 Corinthians xv. 35, 44.—But some men will say, how
are the dead raised up? and with what body do they
come? Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quick-
ened except it die. And that which thou sowest, thou
sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it
may chance of wheat, or of some other grain : but
God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to
every seed his own body. All flesh is not the same
flesh : but there is one kind of flesh of men, another
flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.
There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial :
but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of
the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the
sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory
of the stars; for one star difiereth from another star in
glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead : it is
sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption : it is
sown in dishonour, it is raised in glory : it is sown in
weakness, it is raised in power: it is sown a natural body,
it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and
there is a spiritual body.
