THE HE question relative to general warrants, being now likely to give the miniftry no more trouble ; the fupplies for the current fervices of the year occupied their thoughts and engaged their attention. As they formed a scheme to make the most sparing ufe of taxation, they thereby avoided the most material occafion for popular clamour to excite a ferment or carp at their meafures; rejecting alfo both loan and lottery, they cut off all pretences for oppofition. The debt contracted on account of the war, they propofed discharging, to the amount of 2,000,000l. They were in poffeffion of exchequer bills at a prodigious discount, and a favourable juncture enabled them to dispose of them to the greatest advantage. BRIT. MAG. March, 1772. Moft fortunately for the ministry, the contract with the bank was to be renewed, the treasury therefore availed itself of fo favourable an opportunity; a ftipulated agreement was entered upon, that the bank fhould accept a million of exchequer bills for two years, at an interest reduced by one fourth, and for the renewal of their charter one hundred thoufand pounds was to be paid by way of fine. This negotiation was extolled by the minifterial party, as a master piece of finance, it was trumpetted forth as the most lucrative and beneficial contract ever made with a corporation, whofe vaft money trade is carried on upon the credit of the government.
