This volume must now go forth under circumstances of sacred sorrow. The share which he had in it occupied Dean Stanley till within a few days of the illness which has removed him hence. When the suggestion of its publication was made he welcomed the idea with all the cordiality which marked his appreciation of every wellmeant endeavour, and it was very near his heart that this book might do something to further the cause of charity among English Christians. He has passed all too soon into 'the world within the veil,' and we who are left must now look in vain for his friendship of the friendless, his counsel to the young, his sympathy with those who were maligned or misunderstood. But though the precious presence is no longer within reach, there will ever hover round many of us the lovely and chivalrous spirit of Arthur Penrhyn Stanley.
