2 Cor. v. 10, 11. For we must all appear before the Fudgment-feat of Chrift, that every one may receive the things done in his Body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the Terror of the Lord, we perfwade Men.

What hath been, and is to be the Fate of all Tyrants and Oppreffors, and the Vanity of all their Pomp and Glory, is in a Poetick manner moft elegantly defcribed by the Prophets Ifaiah and Ezekiel.

Ifai. xiv. 4. Thou shalt take up this Proverb against the King of Babylon, and fay, How hath the Oppreffor ceafed! the golden City ceased!

5 The Lord hath broken the Staff of the WICKED, and the Sceptre of the RULERS.

6 He who fmote the People in Wrath, with a continual Stroke; he that ruled the Nations in Anger, is perfecuted, and none hindreth.

7 The whole Earth is at reft, and is quiet: they break forth into Singing

8 Yea, the Fir-Trees rejoice at thee, and the Cedars of Lebanon, faying, Since thou art laid down, no Feller is come up against us.

9 Hell from beneath is moved for thee, to meet thee at thy coming; it flirreth up the Dead for thee, even all the Chief ones of the Earth: it hath raised up from their Thrones all the Kingdoms of the Nations:

10 All they fhall fpeak, and fay unto thee, Art thou alfo become WEAK as we? Art thou become like unto us? 11 Thy Pomp is brought down to the Grave, and the Noife of thy Viols: The Worm is fpread under thee, and the Worms cover thee.

12 How art thou fallen from Heaven, O Lucifer, Son of the Morning! How art thou cut down to the Ground, which didit weaken the Nations?

13 For thou haft faid in thy Heart, I will afcend into Heaven; I will exalt my Throne above the Stars of God: I will fit alfo upon the Mount of the Congregation, in the Sides of the North.

14 I will afcend above the Heights of the Clouds, I will be like the Moft High.

15 Yet thou fhalt be brought down to Hell, to the Sides of the Pit.

16 They that fee thee, fhall narrowly look upon thee and confider thee, faying, Is this the Man that made the Earth to tremble, that did shake Kingdoms?

17 That made the World as a Wildernefs, and destroyed the Cities thereof; that opened not the Houfe of his Prifoners?

18 All the Kings of the Nations, even all of them lie in Glory, every one in his own Houfe.

19 But thou art caft out of thy Grave, like an abominable Branch; and as the Raiment of thofe that are flain, thruft through with a Sword, that go down to the Stones of the Pit, as a Carcafe trodden under Feet.

20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in Burial, because thou haft destroyed thy Land, and flain thy People: the Seed of evil Doers fhall never be renowned.

21 Prepare Slaughter for his Children, for the INIQUITY of their Fathers; that they do not rife nor poffefs the Land, nor fill the Face of the World with Cities.

22 For I will rife up against them, faith the Lord of Hofts, and cut off from Babylon the Name and Remnant, and Son and Nephew, faith the Lord.

I will alfo make it a Poffeffion for the Bittern, and Pools of Water; and I will fweep it with the Besom of Deftruction, faith the Lord of Hofts.

24 The Lord of Hofts hath fworn, faying, Surely as I have thought, fo fhall it come to pafs; and as I have purpofed, fo fhall it stand:

25 That I will break the Affyrian in my Land, and upon my Mountains tread him under foot: Then fhall his Yoke depart from off them, and his Burden depart from off their Shoulders.

26 This is the Purpofe that is purposed upon the whole Earth and this is the Hand that is ftretched out upon all the Nations.

27 For the Lord of Hofts hath purposed, and who fhall difannul it? and his Hand is ftretched out, and who shall turn it back ?

Ezek. xxx11. 17. The Word of the Lord came unto me, faying,

18 Son of Man, wail for the Multitude of Egypt, and caft them down; even her, and the Daughters of the famous Nations, unto the nether Parts of the Earth, with them that go down to the Pit.

19 Whom

19 Whom dost thou pafs in BEAUTY? Go down, and be thou laid with the Uncircumcifed.

20 They fhall fall in the midst of them that are flain by the Sword, fhe is delivered to the Sword: Draw her, and all her Multitudes.

21 The Strong among the Mighty fhall fpeak to him out of the midft of Hell, with them that help him: They are gone down, they lie uncircumcifed, flain by the Sword. 22 Afpur is there, and all her Company.

24 There is Elam, and all her Multitude.

26 There is Meshech, and Tubal, and all her Multitude: Her Graves are round about him.

27 And they fhall not lie with the Mighty that are fallen of the Uncircumcifed, which are gone down to Hell with their Weapons of War: And they have laid their Swords under their Heads, but their INIQUITIES fhall be upon their Bones; though they were the Terror of the Mighty in the Land of the Living.

30 There be the Princes of the North all of them, and all the Sidonians, which are gone down with the Slain with their Terror they are afhamed of their Might, and bear their Shame with them that go down to the Pit.

What is to be the Fate of the ANTICHRISTIAN Babylon, is defcribed in

Rev. XVIII. 1. And I faw an Angel come down from Heaven, having great Power; and the Earth was lightned with his Glory :

2

And he cried mightily with a ftrong Voice, faying, Babylon the Great is fallen, is fallen; and is become the Habitation of Devils, and the hold of every foul Spirit; and a Cage of every unclean and hateful Bird.

3 For all Nations have drunk of the Wine of the Wrath of her Fornication; and the Kings of the Earth have committed Fornication with her; and the Merchants of the Earth are waxed rich, through the Abundance of her Delicacies.

4 And I heard another Voice from Heaven, faying, Come out of her my People, that ye be not Partakers of her SINS, and that ye receive not of her PLAGUES.

5 For her Sins have reached unto Heaven; and God hath remembred her Iniquities.

7 How much fhe hath glorified herfelf, and lived delicioufly; fo much TORMENT and SORROW give her: For fhe faith in her Heart, I fit a Queen, and am no Widow, and fhall fee no Sorrow.

8 Therefore fhall her Plagues come in one Day, DEATH, and MOURNING, and FAMINE; and fhe fhall be utterly burnt with Fire: For ftrong is the Lord God, who judgeth her.

9 And the Kings of the Earth, who have committed Fornication, and lived delicioufly with her, fhall bewail her, and lament for her, when they fhall fee the Smoke of her Burning;

10 Standing afar off for the Fear of her Torment, faying, Alas, alas, that great City Babylon, that mighty City, for in one Hour is thy Judgment come.

11 And the Merchants of the Earth fhall weep and mourn over her; for no Man buyeth her Merchandise any

more.

12 The Merchandise of Gold and Silver, &c. and Souls of Men;

14 And the Fruits that thy Soul lufted after, are departed from thee; and all things which were dainty and goodly, are departed from thee; and thou fhalt find them

no more at all.

15 The Merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, fhall ftand afar off for the Fear of her Torment, weeping and wailing,

16 And faying, Alas, alas, that great City, that was cloathed in fine Linen, and Purple, and Scarlet; and decked with Gold, and precious Stones, and Pearls:

17 For in one Hour is fo great Riches come to nought. And every Ship-mafter, and all the Company in Ships, and Sailers, and as many as Trade by Sea, flood afar off,

18 And cried, when they faw the Smoke of her burning, faying, What City is like unto this great City?

19 And they caft Duft on their Heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, faying, Alas, alas, that great City, wherein were made rich all that had Ships in the Sea, by reafon of her Coftlinefs; for in one Hour is fhe made defolate. 20 Rejoice over her thou Heaven, and ye holy Apoftles, and Prophets, for God hath avenged you on her.

21 And a mighty Angel took up a Stone like a great Milftone, and caft into the Sea, faying, Thus with Vio

lence

lence fhall that great City Babylon be thrown down, and fhall be found no more at all.

22 And the Voice of Harpers and Muficians, and of Pipers and Trumpeters, fhall be heard no more at all in thee: And no Craftsman, of whatsoever Craft he be, fhall be found any more in thee; and the Sound of a Milftone fhall be heard no more at all in thee;

23 And the Light of a Candle fhall fhine no more at all in thee; and the Voice of the Bridegroom and of the Bride fhall be heard no more at all in thee; for thy Merchants were the great Men of the Earth: For by thy Sorceries were all Nations deceived.

24 And in her was found the Blood of the Prophets, and of Saints, and of all that were flain upon the Earth.

Note, The taking of Babylon by the Medes, and the Deftruction of its fumptuous Palaces, was foretold by Ifaiah, above an hundred Years before they were built by Nebuchadnezzar.

But the total Defolation that is foretold by this Prophet, was not accomplished till the time of the Saracen Empire; which was above 1200 Years after the Prediction.
