PREFACE.

It may be regarded as a token for good, that the different classes of society are becoming intelligently interested in each other's welfare, and conscious that their true interests are not conflicting, but identical, when rightly understood and felt. But this idea of mutual benefit has been so long unfelt, or disregarded, that a very dangerous degree of mutual alienation and distrust has been allowed to spring up, which time and mutual kindness can alone remove.

Masters and servants must find some common ground, apart from the immediate relation of masters and servants, in which they can meet and cooperate in what must be obviously fitted to promote their mutual advantage. Such common ground may be found in institutions providing a registration for servants of good character, to which masters may confidently apply; and a home in which servants may safely reside when temporarily unemployed.

The formation and management of such institutions, while it affords the desired common ground of mutual and equal advantage, could not meet all the
