TALLIS GOLD MEDAL.

This Gold Medal, instituted in honour of the Founder of the English School of Music, will be awarded to that Student of the College who, having attended at least two classes throughout three successive Academical Years, shall have afterwards proceeded to the Diploma of Licentiate in Music, and shall have scored at that examination the highest marks among the Candidates entitled to compete under the terms of this regulation.

The next annual award is to be made at the close of Trinity Term, 1885.

With a view to the further encouragement of diligence and progress on the part of the Students of the College, it has been decided to offer the following awards :A Silver Medal to that Student in Music who shall have been most regular and diligent in his attendance upon any two or more classes during the forthcoming Academical Year, commencing Michaelmas Term, 1884.

A Bronze Medal to that Student in Music who shall have been the most regular and diligent in his attendance at any one class during the forthcoming Academical Year, commencing Michaelmas Term, 1884.

In each of the above cases the award will be made in July upon the report of the Professors or Lecturers as to the progress of the Student.

STARK MEDALS.

These Silver Medals, two in number, are annually offered by the Registrar of the College to those Students of the Ladies' Theory Classes who work the best paper in Harmony and Counterpoint respectively set at the end. of Trinity Term. Only those Students are eligible who have attended during the three Terms forming the. Academical year.

These Silver Medals, two in number, are annually offered by Mr. Bradbury Turner to the Student of the College who gets the highest number of marks at the Higher Examinations in July for Pianoforte and Singing respectively. The examination consists of a performance of two pieces from the official list. Only those Students are eligible who have attended a class in these subjects during the three Terms forming the Academical year.

THE SIR MICHAEL COSTA PRIZE.*

SEVENTH YEAR.-1884.

Adjudicator, Sir HERBERT S. OAKELEY, M.A., Mus.D., LL.D.

1. The Academical Board will award a Prize of TEN GUINEAS and the Gold Medal of the College for the best Trio for Pianoforte, Violin and Viola; or Pianoforte, Violin and Violoncello.

2. All Students and Members of the College (excepting only Members of the Council) are eligible for the competition. No Competitor shall be considered eligible who has previously taken the first or only prize at these competitions.

3. Each Composition must consist of at least three movements of the average length, and must be composed specially for this competition.

4. No Competitor is allowed to send in more than one Composition.

5. All Compositions must be sent to the College, addressed to the Secretary, on or before November 30, 1884.

PRIZE ESSAY ON A MUSICAL SUBJECT.

Adjudicator, G. A. OSBORNE, Esq.

1. The Academical Board will award the GOLD MEDAL of the College for the best Essay on the following subject: On the Relationship to Music of the Sister Arts of Poetry and Painting.'

2. All Students and Members of the College (excepting only Members of the Council) are eligible for

the competition, and no Competitor shall be eligible who has previously taken this prize.

3. Each Essay should consist of not more than fifty pages of foolscap size, averaging twenty-four lines per page, and eight words per line; and the MS. must be legibly written on one side of the paper only, and the pages securely fastened together.

4. No Competitor is allowed to send in more than one Essay.

5. All MSS. must be sent to the College, addressed to the Secretary, on or before November 30, 1884.

THE BONAVIA HUNT PRIZES FOR
MUSICAL HISTORY.

Adjudicator, C. HUBERT H. PARRY, Esq., M.A., Mus. D.

The Academical Board having accepted the offer of the Warden of the College of a Prize to be awarded annually for the best Essay on a subject connected with Musical History, the following regulations have been made for the Competition.

1. The subject of the third annual competition will be The History of Oratorio to the death of Mendelssohn.'

2. The Prize, value THREE GUINEAS, will be open to all Members, Students, and Pupils or Members of enrolled Institutions.

3. The length of Essay should not exceed thirty pages of foolscap size, averaging twenty lines per page, and eight words per line. The MS. must be legibly written on one side of the paper only.

4. The period to be dealt with in the Essays may be best defined by a reference to Tables VII. to X. in Bonavia Hunt's Concise History of Music,' but (by the express

desire of the Author, as well as by the rules of the College) the Candidate is by no means restricted to that or any other particular text-book.

5. No Competitor is allowed to send in more than one Essay.

6. All MSS. must be sent to the College, addressed to the Secretary, on or before November 30, 1884.

THE ALMA SANDERS MEDAL.

The Academical Board having accepted the offer of Miss Alma Sanders of a Silver Medal to be awarded annually for the best Composition for the Pianoforte, the following regulations have been made for the Competition :

1. The subject of the first Annual Competition will be the first movement of a Pianoforte Sonata.

2. Only Students of the College of at least three Terms' standing are eligible.

3. No Competitor is allowed to send in more than one Composition.

4. All MSS. must be sent to the College, addressed to the Secretary, on or before November 30, 1884.
