written at the top left-hand corner of his printed sheet of questions; and his Name must not be written thereon, under any circumstances. Each answer is to be written in the space provided for it. No other paper or sheet will be read by the Examiners.

7. If a Candidate desire to ask a question of the Local Secretary or Superintendent, he must call out his number and hold up his hand, and both question and answer must be stated aloud. Candidates are not permitted to hold any kind of communication with each other. No one leaving the Examination Room will be allowed to return.

8. At the end of two hours from the commencement of the Pass Examination the answers to the Pass Sections in both Divisions must be given up. At the end of two hours from the commencement of the Honours Examination the answers to the Honours Section in both Divisions must be given up. The Local Secretary or Superintendent will seal up the Candidates' work (having seen that each paper is properly numbered and placed in exact numerical order, so as to correspond with the returnforms) in their presence, and post the Packet or Packets the same day to "The Secretary, Trinity College, London, W."

The following is for the Local Secretary alone :—

(a) Pens, ink, scribbling-paper, and blotting-paper should be proIvided at each centre.

(b) The Local Secretary's return-form of Candidates, with the respective Registration Numbers assigned to the names, will be separately forwarded a few days before the Examination takes place. The Local Secretary is requested to take a copy of these numbers, so as to identify the names both at, and after, the Examination; and the return-form must be sent back if possible by the next post. The greatest care is requested in complying with this regulation.

(c) The Examination Papers will be sent so as to reach the Local Secretaries by the first post on the morning of the day previous to that of the Examination, at latest. In the event of the non-arrival of the papers by that time, a telegram should be sent at once to the "Secretary, Trinity College, 13 Mandeville Place, Manchester Square, London, W.," when a further supply will be posted.

REGULATIONS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF
SCHOOLS IN MUSIC.

1. The Examinations take place at Midsummer and Christmas, and at other times, subject to special arrangement.

2. The Principal of a School desiring an Examination should apply to the Secretary of the College, stating:

a. Number of pupils in the School receiving Musical Instruction.

b. Number of classes or divisions (with number of pupils in each) to be examined.

c. Subjects in which the pupils are to be examined.

d. Whether the Examination is to be

a. By papers.

B. Vivâ voce.

7. By papers and vivâ voce.

e. Whether there are any candidates for

Certificates.

3. The Principal of the School will then receive an estimate of the cost of the Examination.

The Examination will be of two kinds— a. For Certificates.

b. General Examination.

5. The subjects of the Examination may be all or any of the following :

a. Elementary Musical Knowledge (Senior).

b.

c. Pianoforte Playing.

d. Singing.

e. Class Singing.

(Junior).

f. Organ Playing.

g. Harmonium Playing.

h. School Band Playing-separate instruments or ensemble.

6. Candidates may enter for Certificates in each subject. 7. A list of the candidates and classes examined, arranged

in order of merit, with the number of marks obtained, together with a general report on the musical instruction in the School, will be forwarded by the Academical Board to the Principal or the Governing Body of the School.

8. The Academical Board will appoint in each School a qualified person to act as Superintendent at the Examination.

COLLEGE PRIZES.

CHAMBER MUSIC PRIZES.

A series of annual competitions in the various forms of composition usually known as Chamber Music, has been inaugurated by the College. The prize consists of a Gold Medal and Ten Guineas, and the competitions are regulated by conditions drawn up by the Academical Board and published annually. (See page 88.)

This Prize, of the yearly value of Five Guineas, presented by J. S. Gabriel, Esq., V.P., will be awarded annually to the Associate in Music who sends in the best Harmony Paper of the year at the Higher Examinations.
