(i.) Candidates for Licentiateship should answer Nos. 5, 6, 7, 8 (or 9), 10, and 11. Four hours allowed.

(ii.) Candidates for Associateship must answer Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4. allowed.

Two hours

(iii.) Candidates for certificates in Counterpoint must work the Paper as follows: For a Pass certificate, Nos. 1 to 5 (inclusive); for an Honour certificate, Nos. to 7 inclusive). In each case three hours will be allowed.

SECTIONS F AND G.-FORM AND INSTRUMENTATION. Form.

1. Give an outline description of the Binary form as used in the first movement of a Sonata in a major key. In this description the Coda should be mentioned.

2. Give a similar description of a first movement in a minor key. 3. Of what thematic material should the working-out, or "free fantasie," of a first movement consist?

4. Is it possible to introduce a new subject in the “free fantasie”? Are there any instances in the works of the great composers having done so? If so, name one.

5. What are the forms most used for slow movements?

6. What is the difference between a Scherzo and a Minuet? What feature do they both possess in common?

7. Give an outline description of the true Rondo form. (N. B. —A description of those last movements or Finales in which the Binary form is used must not be given.)

Instrumentation.

8. Out of the following chords and double notes which of them would be practicable for the Violin, and which of them impracticable? Quote them by the numbers.

9. Write "God save the Queen" for the Corno Inglese so that the real effect produced shall sound to the ear as if played in the key of G.

10. When the notes of the Violoncello are too high for the Bass clef, what clefs may be used?

II Name the three keys in which Clarionets are used in an Orchestra, and give the reason for their being employed in different keys. Likewise mention which are the best keys to make use of.

12. Instrument the following phrase for full Orchestra, consisting of Strings, Wood-wind, 4 Horns, 2 Trumpets, 3 Trombones, Ophicleide, and Tympani
