GAWNE Capt. of K Christ Rushen in yo yeare 1651, sworn & examined deposed & sayth that pceyvinge a murmeringe amongst his Company for a risinge, hee con- Murmering sented with them, And yt it was Mr. Wm. Qualtrough of Deemster Kentraugh that was y chiefest actor, & yt hee had gott y Qualtrough said company together at ye hill of Kentraugh before hee this examt came from Castletowne on ye head court day, & this examt soe findinge them marched with them along to Marched to Raynoldsway, where the said Wm. Qualtrough advised him to bringe them, & sayth yt Comptroller Sharples was privy Comptroll to ye said risinge, & a great incendiary therein, And yt hee this examt never tooke an Oath about ye said risinge either at Raynoldsway or els where, nor did not see any of the company there assembled take any Oath, And further sayth yt hee heard yo said Wm. Qualtrough speake two years before D. Qualye said risinge, that it would doe noe good to withstand ye trough forethree nations, And yt about six weekes before ye risinge, y risinge. Deemster Qualtrough was speakinge in like maner, And acknowledged that hee this examt gave his concent to y° Gawne's said Wm. Qualtrough to raise his pish as afforesaid.

Att Castle Peele the fourth of Octob" 1662.

SR ROBERT NORRIS, Clerke (now of Douglas towne) sworne & examined deposeth & sayth, That hee never knew Y risinge of the risinge of ye countrey in their insurrecion or rebellion in the yeare 1651 befor the head court day at night that was to be houlden in that winter 1651, and that hee received that knowledge from the before named Wm. Xtian of Raynoldsway the same night, but sayth that Wm. Qualtrough of Kentraugh late Deemster in this Isle tould him about a month before or shortly after the late Earle of Derby went out of ye Isle in the said yeare for England, that hee thought y countrey would rise, for that they found themselves aggreeved because of the troope that then was in the Isle & their free quarteringe or words to that effect, This Exam further sayth that beinge inquissitive from ye said Wm. Xtian, Receiv' to know uppon what grounds they did soe rise hee the said Wm. Xtian answered him hee need not feare for hee had a Comission for itt from y° States delivered by ye hands of Major ffox and there uppon produced a writinge ye said Receiver tould him was ye sd Comission & read Wch ye same unto this exam and ye sd Wm. Qualtrough, Hugh Moore, John Cesar, & others & that ye sd Wm. Xtin also tould him yt ye Comission was from ye Parliamt to ye said Major ffox as before & that as hee remembers the contents of ye Comis- ye sd Comission was that the said Receiver should raise the sion agt ye countrey in Armes against the Counteese Derby then in ye Derby. Castle Rushen, And further declareth that ye said Wm. Xtin Oath dd by delivered him this exam an oath to bee administered to ye Rec Xt people, wch in substance is as followeth, viz., That the people substance should wthstand ye Lady of Derby in her designes untill shee

Xtin engadged him this examt by protestacon y ExamTM's to be true unto him & yt hee heard ye said Wm. Xtin say to be true (besides many others) that her Lapp should sell ye people for to Recr 2d or 3d a peece, And yt ye sd Wm. Xtin said that her Lapp People to promissed that shee would make known unto them when 24 or 3d a shee sent to make condicons with ye Parliam & yt shee sent piece. wthout their knowledge contrary to her promise & would sell Discontent them for 24 or 3d a peece as before to destroy them, hee promises also sayth that ye said Wm. Xtin of Raynoldsway adminis- from her tered ye aforesaid oath to many of y° people himself as to 24 and 34 Sr Tho. Parr & others, And further sayth that hee never knew Recr Xtn nor heard of any other to bee the cheife actor in the said risinge, but him ye said Wm. Xtin of Raynoldsway only, hee oath to yo also sayth that ye other actors in the said risinge was Hugh Reer ye Moore of Douglas who brought in ye company of K Lonan, or actor in & James Banckes of ye How who brought in ye company of KK Conchan & Henry Moore ye company of K Marrowne actors. Xtin shewed this The Exam a Comision wch was delivered him ye sd Wm. Xtin by Comission Major ffox wch puported yt by ye same pouer that hee ye sd Fox to the Major ffox had from ye States he comissionaled him ye sd Wm. Standish & as hee thinks old John Curghie yt Collonell Major Fox. Duckenfield had promised yt ye condicons made betwixt ye Lady & y countrey should be pformed, And thereupon the said psons last before named went aboard to conclude yo same, hee further sayth that ye said Wm. Xtin Receiver sent him this Rect orders exam to ye north pte of yo Isle for to give orders to arreast all
