Excerpt from The Bass Rock: Its Civil and Ecclesiastic History

The Geological description of the rock which follows, comes from the pen of one of whom it may be truly said, as it was of Goldsmith, that there was nothing he touched that he did not adorn. It would be mere afi'ectation in one who can hardly boast of having mas tered the nomenclature of the science which Mr Miller has done so much to popularize and advance, to pretend to act as his cicerone. And, indeed, I feel very much in the predicament of the servant who, after in vain attempting to enunciate the name of a Russian noble man at a party, begged as a particular favour that his Excellence would Show up himself.
