There all the fprightly powers of wit
In blithe affemblage play;

There ev'ry focial virtue sheds

Its intellectual ray.

But as the fun's refulgent light
Heav'ns wide expanse refines;
With fov'reign luftre through the foul
Celeftial sweetness shines.

This mental beam dilates the heart,
And sparkles in the face;

It harmonizes every thought,

And heightens every grace,

One glimpse can footh the troubled breaft

The heaving figh restrain !

Can make the bed of fickness please,
And ftop the fense of pain.

Its power can charm the favage heart,
The tyrants pity move:
To fmiles convert the wildest rage

And melt the foul to love.

When fweetnefs beams upon the throne

In majefty benign,

The awful fplendors of a crown,

With milder luftre fhine.

Who envies none whom chance doth raise,

Or vice; who never understood

How deepest wounds are given with praise; Nor rules of ftate, but rules of good:

Who God doth late and early pray
More of his grace than gifts to lend,
And entertains the harmless day

With a well-chofen book or friend!

This man is freed from fervile bands
Of hope to rife, or fear to fall,
Lord of himself, though not of lands;
And having nothing, yet hath all.

F damask cheeks and radiant eyes,
Let other pocts tell:

Within the bofom of the fair

Superior beauties dwell.

With fov'reign luftre through the foul
Celestial sweetness shines.

The influence of this living ray
The dreary gloom difpels.

Thus, when the blooming Spring returns
To chear the mournful plains,

Through earth and air, with genial warmth, Etherial mildness reigns.

Beneath its bright aufpicious beam's
No boift'rous paffions rife ;.
Morofeness quits the peaceful scenes,
And baleful difcord flies.

A thousand nameless beauties fpring,
A thousand virtues glow;
A fmiling train of joys appear,
And endless bleffings.flow...

Unbounded Charity" difplay's

Her fympathizing charms;
And Friendship's pure feraphic flame
The generous bofom warms.

Almighty love exerts his power,

And fpreads with fecret art

A foft fenfation through the frame,
A tranfport through the heart.

Nor fhall the ftorms of age, which cloud

Each gleam of fenfual joy,

And blast the gaudy flower's pride,

These bleft effects destroy.

When that fair form shall fink in years,
And all these graces fly;
The beauty of thy heavenly mind

Shall length of days defy.

RE yellow Autumn from our plains retir'd,

And gave to wintry ftorms the varied year, The swallow-race, with forefight clear infpir'd, To southern climes prepar'd their course to steer.

On Damon's roof a grave affembly fate;
His roof a refuge to the feather'd kind;
With ferious look he mark'd the nice debate,
And to his Delia thus addrefs'd his mind.

Obferve yon twitt'ring flock, my gentle maid, Obferve and read the wond'rous ways of Heav'n, With us through Summer's genial reign' they ftay'd, And food and lodging to their wants were given.
