Obituary.

panions to leave the field. About three years since, his memory became impaired as to many of the succeeding events of his life; at the same time his eyes began to fail him; but he retained the use of all his limbs till within a few weeks of his death; and continued to milk

some of his cows till within the last two years. Through his long life he possessed and maintained the character of an industrious and honest man.

Rev. J. Douglas, D. D. 20 years vicar of Beenham, Berks. At his son's house, in James street, Buckingham gate, Edm. Ayrton, Mus. D. gentleman of his Majesty's Chapels 44 years, and vicar-choral of St. Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.

At Pontgarreg, in the parish of Llandyssyl, Cardiganshire, John Davies Jenkin, shoemaker. He was a remarkable instance of the improvement natural genius is capable of, by application, without the assistance of education. He became a master of the English language, so far as to understand the divines, historians, and politicians of the age, though he could neither ask nor answer the shortest questions in that language.

At Presteign, Radnorshire, in his 88th year, Mr. William Stanton, who served the office of parish clerk fiity-four years. He was blind latterly, but lived to know his great great grand daughter, who had living previous to his decease, her father, grandfather, and grandmother, great grandfather, and great

grandmother, and the above mentioned great great grandfather; all of whom resided within thirty yards of each other. What is very remarkable, his immediate predecessor in the office of parish clerk (one Richard Bebb) held that office forty years, who was grandfather to one of the present Directors of the East India Company. A humourous incident, well known in that town, between the rector and the clerk's son, was the cause of his quitting the country, and settling in London, which laid the foundation of the present advancement in life of that family.

At Newcastle upon Tyne, aged 60, Mr. William Temple, weaver, and of late years governor of All Saints poor house. By uncommon industry and perseverance, and by a close and regular application of the few hours of leisure afforded from a laborious occupation, he had acquired a familiar knowledge. of the Hebrew, Arabic, Persian, and Greek languages, and with the various Eastern dialects, as well as with the Latin, and some of the modern languages. The study of the original scriptures was his ardent and unwearied pursuit, and few possessed equal talents for biblical criticism.

TO CORRESPONDENTS.

The Letters of Philalethes will be acceptable; but the more fo if they are in English. In anfwer to the query of a Subfcriber, we can only fay that the sketch of the late Archbishop Moore, was furnished by an intelligent friend, on whose accuracy we relied. If our correfpondent, however, has any other particulars of that excellent prelate, we fhall be glad to receive them. The letter of OBSCURUS never came to hand.
