BE IT REMEMBERED, That on the seventh day of May, in the fifty-third year of the Independence of the United States of America, George Jones, of the ********* said District, hath deposited in this office, the title of a Book, the right whereof he claims as Author, in the words following, to wit:

Sketches of Naval Life, with notices of men, manners and scenery, on the shores of the Mediterranean, in a series of letters from the Brandywine and Constitution Frigates. In two volumes. By A CIVILIAN.""

In conformity to the Act of Congress of the United States, entitled, "An Act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned." And also to the Act, entitled, "An Act supplementary to an Act, entitled, An Act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the Authors and Proprietors of such copies during the times therein mentioned,' and extending the benefits thereof to the arts of designing, engraving, and etching historical and other prints.”

PREFACE.

By a "Civilian,"-for that was one of my titles; and I like it best for this occasion, as it will shew that I was among ships, as a traveller in a strange country. My impressions were all of that character, and the descriptions are accordingly. Naval men may think that I dwell too long on trifles, or treat great matters slightly; but I give things, just as they affected me, and as, I believe, they would affect all landsmen; for whom, chiefly, the book is intended.

A man of war is a curious place. I well recollect the astonishment and high admiration, with which some of its scenes filled me at first; and the still deeper interest, with which I afterwards watched the development of a system, so complicated, yet complete; a system presenting the singular spectacle of a thorough monarchy, sheltered under the wings of republicanism. I well recollect, too, the pleasure, with which I saw our navy, slowly but surely building up a fair character for our nation abroad. My first wish, after enjoying these things myself, was to have people at home enjoy them too; and hence the copious journals, from which the materials for these letters have been drawn. The journals were commenced in the epistolary form; and though the whole has been remodeled, and such corrections and additions have been made, as subsequent reading has suggested, yet the changes have often been very slight.
