SUITABLE TOPICS

FOR DEVOTIONAL ENGAGEMENTS ON THE SABBATH-DAY.

ADORATION AND PRAISE.

WE praise God on this day—

For the works of creation,

Whose completion the sabbath was originally instituted to commemorate, and which show forth to us his infinite wisdom, goodness, power, and godhead;

For the revelation of the Scriptures,

Which are a key to the discoveries of creation, and an important supplement to them;

For the redemption of mankind, by Jesus Christ,

Whose triumph over death and Satan, on our behalf, in his resurrection, ascension, and descent of the Holy Spirit, the Christian sabbath commemorates;

For the institution of one day in every seven,

To release us from the toils of life, and suspend the operations of a worldly spirit, by displacing its objects, and leaving room for the entrance of better thoughts;

For the ordinances of religion,

The reading and enforcing of the Scriptures, the ministry of the word, and communion of saints.

We praise God on this day—

For ability and inclination, in any measure,

To attend upon the same, and to prize and value them;

For the prospect of that heavenly rest,

For which the sabbath is designed to prepare us, and of which it is a type and pledge.

CONFESSION AND HUMILIATION.

WE Confess and bewail

Our misimprovement of past sabbaths, and of religious privileges;

The encroachments of a worldly spirit which have been allowed, and neglect of due preparation for devotional services; Allowed drowsiness of spirit, and indifference in religious exercises;

Forgetfulness, on retiring from ordinances, of what had engaged our attention, for want of serious review and reflection;

The awful profanation of the sabbath by those who dwell around us, and in various parts of our own country, as well as in Christendom at large;

The sad example set by some in high places, of the neglect of sabbath duties;

The countenance given to this disregard, by the conduct and conversation of some professing Christians;

The state of those parts of the earth where the Christian sabbath and its ordinances are not known;

The little spiritual benefit that results from the abundance of means employed to effect it, especially on sabbath days.

PETITION AND INTREATY.

We implore

A devout and spiritual frame of mind throughout the day; A sense of pardon, and accceptance of our persons and services, through the sacrifice and mediation of Christ.

We implore

A candid and unprejudiced state of mind to be afforded to those attending to the topics brought before them, for their edification;

A disposition to be given to all such to apply to their own cases and consciences the truths that are delivered;

A sincere intention to be imparted to them, to carry out into practice, by Divine help, the duties that are inculcated;

A Divine, controlling influence, checking all vain and wandering thoughts, and repelling all suggestions of a sinful nature that might be offered to the mind during the season of public or social worship;

A greater disposition to be excited in mankind around us, to attend upon God's word and ordinances;

A special aid from above, to be afforded to ministers and others employed in the advocacy of revealed truth, on this holy day; An overruled beneficial result from causes that unavoidably detain any of God's people from his house and services;

That His ways "may be known upon earth," his "saving health among all nations," so that the whole world may become a temple filled with his worshippers and resounding with his praise.
