REPORT.

The period covered by this report of the Bureau of Railways, June 30, 1906 to June 30, 1907, was the most active and prosperous in the entire history of railroads. Great increases along all lines of operations are shown by the information contained in their reports to this Department and they have contributed a large share to the general prosperity that has prevailed in this State as well as in the country at large.

A careful analysis of the principal tables which accompany this report exhibits, most satisfactorily, the amazing growth in the business of transportation.

STEAM RAILROADS.

Table C.-Assets.

The steam railroads reporting to this department and doing business in the State show assets amounting to $4,497,706,989, or an increase over the previous year of $203,475,961. The following statement shows the items in which the increases occurred:

The only item in which a decrease occurred was that of "Cash and Current Assets," and it was very marked, amounting to $130,719,649.

Table B.-Liabilities.

This table is important as exhibiting the capitalization of the steam railroads. The total is $4,478,266,254, and the increase for the year 1907 over 1906 amounted to $173,385,957.

The following statement shows the items in which the increases occurred:

The only decrease was in the item "Total Amount of Other Forms of Indebtedness," and amounted to $8,652,750,

Table E.-Equipment and Persons Employed.

The following statement shows the increase in the respective items for the year 1907 as compared with the previous year, 1906:

Table G.-Number of Passengers Carried.
Cost per Mile.

The increase in number of passengers carried and in total passenger revenue was as marked as in other branches of the business. The following statement shows the items in which the increases occurred:

Table J.-Earnings and Income.

The earnings of the railroads for the period covered by this report were enormous. The total was $862,984,533, an increase for the year of $72,000,156. The following statement shows the items in which the increases occurred:
