6. Candidates may enter for Certificates in each subject. 7. A list of the candidates and classes examined, arranged

in order of merit, with the number of marks obtained, together with a general report on the musical instruction in the School, will be forwarded by the Academical Board to the Principal or the Governing Body of the School.

8. The Academical Board will appoint in each School a qualified person to act as Superintendent at the Examination.

COLLEGE PRIZES.

CHAMBER MUSIC PRIZES.

A series of annual competitions in the various forms of composition usually known as Chamber Music, has been inaugurated by the College. The prize consists of a Gold Medal and Ten Guineas, and the competitions are regulated by conditions drawn up by the Academical Board and published annually. (See page 79.)

This Prize, of the yearly value of Five Guineas, presented by J. S. Gabriel, Esq., V.P., will be awarded. annually to the Associate in Music who sends in the best Harmony Paper of the year at the Higher Examinations.

This Gold Medal, instituted in honour of the Founder of the English School of Music, will be awarded to that Student of the College who, having attended at least two classes throughout three successive Academical Years, shall have afterwards proceeded to the Diploma of Licentiate in Music, and shall have scored at that examination the highest marks among the

Candidates entitled to compete under the terms of this

regulation.

The next annual award is to be made at the close of Trinity Term, 1883.

AWARDS FOR STUDENTS IN MUSIC. With a view to the further encouragement of diligence and progress on the part of the Students of the College, it has been decided to offer the following awards :— A Silver Medal to that Student in Music who shall have been most regular and diligent in his attendance upon any two or more classes during the forthcoming Academical Year, commencing Michaelmas Term, 1883.

A Bronze Medal to that Student in Music who shall have been the most regular and diligent in his attendance at any one class during the forthcoming Academical Year, commencing Michaelmas Term, 1883.

In each of the above cases the award will be made upon the report of the Professors or Lecturers as to the progress of the Student.

STARK MEDALS.

These Silver Medals, two in number, are annually offered by the Registrar of the College to those Students of the Ladies' Theory Classes who work the best paper in Harmony and Counterpoint respectively set at the end of Trinity Term. Only those Students are eligible who have attended during the three Terms forming the Academical year.

CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION.*

SIXTH YEAR.-1883.

Adjudicator, SIR MICHAEL COSTA.

1. The Academical Board will award a Prize of TEN GUINEAS and the Gold Medal of the College for the best Quartett for Pianoforte, Violin, Viola, Violoncello.

2. All Students and Members of the College (excepting only Members of the Council) are eligible for the competition. No Competitor shall be considered eligible who has previously taken the first or only prize at these competitions.

3. Each Composition must consist of at least three movements of the average length, and must be composed specially for this competition.

4. No Competitor is allowed to send in more than one Composition.

5. All Compositions must be sent to the College, addressed to the Secretary, on or before November 30, 1883.

PRIZE ESSAY ON A MUSICAL SUBJECT.

Adjudicator, E. H. TURPIN, Esq.

1. The Academical Board will award the GOLD MEDAL of the College for the best Essay on the following subject: On the use of the Orchestra in the Services of the Church.'

2. All Students and Members of the College (excepting only Members of the Council) are eligible for the

competition, and no Competitor shall be eligible who has previously taken this prize.

3. Each Essay should consist of not more than fifty pages of foolscap size, averaging twenty-four lines per page, and eight words per line; and the MS. must be legibly written on one side of the paper only, and the pages securely fastened together.

4. No Competitor is allowed to send in more than one Essay.

5. All MSS. must be sent to the College, addressed to the Secretary, on or before November 30, 1883.

SACRED

MUSIC COMPETITION.

Adjudicator, Dr. W. H. LONGHurst.

I. The Academical Board will award a Prize of THREE GUINEAS for the best Chorale or Hymn-tune for the following words, by the Bishop of Lincoln, and selected by his Lordship's kind permission:

O Thou, the Way, the Truth, the Life,
Jesu, Creator, Mighty Lord,

Eternal Sire's Eternal Son,

By hosts angelical ador'd.

For us Thou deignedst to be born
To suffer grief and bitter scorn.

3. Each Composition must be in four vocal parts (S.A.T.B.), using the proper clefs, and must be composed specially for this competition.

4. No Competitor is allowed to send in more than one Composition.
