The Academical Board have to acknowledge the kindness of Messrs. J. and J. Hopkinson in sending, for the use of the College, four Grand and four Cottage Pianofortes, and of Messrs. Pleyel, Wolff and Co. in sending a Pedalier.

EXAMINATIONS.

REGULATIONS AS TO EXAMINATIONS FOR
DIPLOMAS IN MUSIC.

I. The College confers, upon examination, the Diplomas or superior Grades of Associate and Licentiate in Music, of Trinity College, London.

II. The Examinations are open to all persons, whether Students of the College or not.

III. The Public Examinations are held twice a year, usually in January and July. The dates of the Examinations are announced at least two months previously in Musical Education, the adopted organ of the College, and one or more of the other musical journals; and will be found in the Almanack prefixed to the College Calendar.

IV. MATRICULATION.-Candidates are required to pass an Examination of an elementary character in the subjects of an ordinary education.*

The Matriculation Examination is held in London at the same time as the Musical Examinations, for the convenience of those Candidates who, residing at a distance, desire to combine it with the Examination for Associateship. The two Examinations may be taken together or separately, at the option of the Candidate, who, however, must in the latter case at some time previously have entered as a Candidate at one of the Higher or Local Examinations in Music of the College, or must

subscribe a declaration on the form of entry that he or she applies to be admitted to the Matriculation Examination "with a view to hereafter entering for one of the Higher Musical Examinations of the College, or to qualifying for any position, scholarship, or exhibition therein, where matriculation is or shall be one of the conditions of Candidature." Those who elect to submit to the Matriculation test separately may be permitted, subject in every case to the discretion of the Academical Board, to work the prescribed papers at certain local Centres, appointed by the Board, and notified at least one month beforehand in one or more of the musical journals.

V. ASSOCIATE IN MUSIC-Candidates are required to have Matriculated, and to satisfy the Examiners in the undermentioned subjects :

Preliminary Division.*—i. Any one of the following at the option

of the Candidate :

(a) Choir Training.

(b) Construction of the Vocal and Aural
Organs.

(c) General Musical Knowledge.
(d) Elementary Acoustics.

and also in-ii. Musical History.

Pass Division.-Harmony in not more than four parts.

Counterpoint in not more than three parts.

Viva voce questions in Harmony and Counterpoint, of the same standard as the papers set.

Candidates for Associateship may enter either for the Preliminary Division alone, or for both Divisions at the same Examination. Those who pass in the Preliminary Division only, may enter for the Pass Division separately at any subsequent Examination.

N.B.-Candidates for Associateship who have obtained Honours Certificates in the Senior Division of the "Local Examination in Elementary Musical Knowledge," may claim exemption from the work of the Preliminary Division. Candidates who have obtained Honours Certificates in the Senior Division of the "Local

The Certificate of "Student in Music" will no longer be granted. The subjects of Examination for that Certificate are now placed as a "Preliminary Division" of the Associateship Examination.

Examinations in Instrumental Music" will be exempt from part i. of the Preliminary Division. The Certificates of the "Higher Examinations for Women," or in "Technical Skill," will be recognised as respectively stated in the Regulations for those Examinations, which may be had on application to the Secretary.

VI. LICENTIATE IN MUSIC.-Candidates for the Grade of Licentiate must previously (with the exception named in Paragraph VII.) have obtained the Grade of Associate in Music. The Examination will include the following subjects*

Harmony in not more than five parts.
Counterpoint in not more than five parts.

Double Counterpoint, Imitation, Canon, and Fugue.
Form in Musical Composition.

Instrumentation.

VII. A Graduate in Music of any British University may, on satisfying the Examiners in the Department of Choir Training, or in Vocal and Aural Physiology, pass at once to the position of Licentiate.

VIII. The following is a summary of the above Regulations :

A. Matriculation Examination (or a recognised equivalent).

B. i. (a) Choir Training; (b) Vocal and Aural Physiology; (c) General Musical Knowledge; (d) Elementary Acoustics. ii. Musical History.

C. Harmony.

D. i. Counterpoint. ii. Canon and Fugue.

E. (This Section not to come into operation until January, 1885) Further Examination in Arts for the Diploma of Licentiate. F. Form in Musical Composition.

G. Instrumentation.

ASSOCIATE.-Section A. (Matriculation): Either (a), (b), (c), or (d)-one subject-in part i. of Section B; part ii. of Section B; Section C (up to four parts); Section D i. (up to three parts); viva voce questions on two latter Sections. Examination may be divided as follows: 1. Section A ; 2. Section B i. and ii. ; 3. Sections C and D. 1, 2, and 3 may be taken separately in regular order, I and 2 together; 2 and 3 together; or all three together.

*The previous Exercise for Licentiateship is no longer required; see, however, the new regulations for Fellowship.

LICENTIATE.-I. To have previously obtained Associateship, and to pass in Sections C, D, [E]*, F, and G. II. A Graduate in Music of any British University to pass at once to Licentiateship on satisfying the Examiners in Section B i. (a) or (b).

Subject to the Exemptions given below, no Certificate in Music, with the exception of the certificates for Technical skill in single subjects and those obtained at the Local Examinations, shall be given to any candidate who has not passed a Matriculation Examination on the plan given below; and on and after January 1, 1885, the Diploma of Licentiate in Music shall not be given to any new candidate who has not passed a Higher Examination in Arts.

For the years 1883 and 1884 the following shall be the subjects for the Matriculation Examination :-(a) English Grammar and Composition. (b) Arithmetic (all rules up to and including Stocks). (c) Outlines of English History (1066–1837). (d) Geography (the Political Geography of Europe). (e) i. Second Book of Kings and Gospel according to St. John; ii. Latin, Cæsar, Book I., Questions on Grammar and sentences to translate into Latin; iii. French, Un Philosophe sous les Toits, Questions on Grammar and sentences to translate into French; iv. Italian, Questions on Grammar, and translation of easy passages from English into Italian and from

Unsuccessful Candidates for Associateship, and those Candidates who, after paying the Fee, do not present themselves, may be admitted to the next succeeding Examination on payment of £I IS.

§ Unsuccessful Candidates for Licentiateship, and those Candidates who, after paying the Fee, do not present themselves, may be admitted to the next succeeding Examination on payment of LI IIS. 6d.

No other abatement is made in respect of any of the above-mentioned fees. There are no Diploma or Certificate fees.
