Introduction to Canto First.

November's sky is chill and drear,
November's leaf is red and sear.
Away hath pass'd the heather-bell
That bloom'd so rich on Needpath-fell.
And ne'er held marble in its trust
Of two such wondrous men the dust.

Introduction to Canto Second.

When these waste glens with copse were lined,

And peopled with the hart and hind.

Oft in my mind such thoughts awake,
By lone Saint Mary's silent lake.
For though, in feudal strife, a foe
Hath laid Our Lady's chapel low.
Then gaze on Dryhope's ruin'd tower,
And think on Yarrow's faded flower.

Thy tower, proud Bamborough, mark'd they there,

There, deep in Durham's Gothic shade,
His relics are in secret laid.

In long black dress, on seats of stone,
Behind were these three judges shown.
Fix'd was her look, and stern her air:
Back from her shoulders stream'd her hair.
