But riches fail'd to ease the smart,

Where conscious guilt had fix'd a stain;
Where crime had rankled in the heart,
That sought for peace, but sought in vain.
Then 'twas the faithful pastor's care,
To hear the harrowing tale of woe;
To hear the accents of despair

Pronounce the fear-extorted vow.

'Twas mine to calm the troubled breast,
Religion's cheering truths reveal;
And sooth the guilty soul to rest,
When waking conscience bid it feel.

Such were the riches I bestow'd,

And thus the poor my bounty shar'd;
And when with hope their bosoms glow'd,
The silent tear was my reward.

'Twas mine to tend the couch of pain,
To wait upon the bed of death,
And consecrate the pious strain
That hung upon their parting breath.

And when the coy and blushing fair
Appear'd to seal the plighted vow,
"Twas mine, upon the happy pair,
The nuptial blessing to bestow.

Such are the Village Pastor's cares,
Such the rewards his cares repay;
Each feeling of the heart he shares,

He points to Heav'n, and leads the way.

Then tempt me not with wealth or pow'r,
Oh! give me not the lordling's dome;
Drive not away the humble poor,

That now surround my peaceful home.

"The Cottage Maid" follows her reverend friend; "The Seasons of Life" roll round instructive; "The Looking Glass" reflects a useful lesson; and " Friendship's Visit" cannot fail to increase the pleasing recollections of "The Welcome Home." But our present limits will not admit of copious extract; nor should we be disposed to quote liberally, if they did. It is not fair dealing with an author, to adorn the review of his book with all its best passages, and leave the public to conclude, that what else it contains is unworthy of perusal.

There is less originality in the work than its title promises; but, perhaps, it was only meant to intimate, that the pieces had been composed, not merely selected, by the author. In the language, too, we often meet with inaccuracies of expression, defects of metre, and incongruities of rhyme : but, in such a publication, these are not very serious faults; and it is with a strong recommendation of these "Original Poems" to the parents and friends of "young persons," that we now take leave of our readers for the present, by concluding the third volume of our Journal, (as the author of the pages before us has terminated his labours,) with the following

FAREWELL!

Farewell! and let the moral of the muse,

Tho' rude may be her lyre, untun'd her string,
Some useful lesson in the heart infuse,

Some pleasing tribute to the memory bring.

Farewell! and may each virtue of the heart
The faithful looking-glass reveal to view,-
Sincerity, that scorns the garb of art,

And Faith,-to Reason's voice for ever true.

Farewell! and may each hour in circling round,
As it fades onward in the vale of time,
Be in some useful occupation found,

And by improvement mark your youthful prime.

Farewell! and, tho' no literary fame

Should e'er adorn the author's humble lays,
He seeks not honour by an empty name;
Let but the Reader's profit be his praise.
