and the offer by five trade journals to provide a guarantee fund for the publication of the Index some of the members of the Council of 1903 might be in a position to explain.

Whatever silenced history may be involved in this transaction, those members of the Association who at Mackinac were so willing to accept the offer of the five journals, ought to be informed that thus far but thirty-four copies of the Index have been sold.

#

What is all this talk of the value of the Proceedings of the A. Ph. A. about, if but a few members care to make their sets practically useful by the purchase of a copy of the Index? How many members who have used this argument on the floor of the A. Ph. A. and while persuading others to join the Association have backed their argument with a check of five dollars? Very few indeed.

There is still another point of view to this indifference that may be worth a moment's reflection. We are reputed to have about eighty colleges ond schools of pharmacy. It might be worth while to inquire how many of these institutions have a complete set of the Proceedings of the A. Ph. A. Whatever the value of the Proceedings to the pharmaceutical practitioner, there can be no question that any educational institution in this country that has a pharmacy course as a part of its curriculum and is not in possession of a complete set of the Proceedings of the A. Ph. A. ought to be advertised in the pharmaceutical press. Now, if all of the sold copies of the Index have gone to the educational institutions-which is not at all probable-less than one-half of them are by this time provided with the Index which makes their set really useful.

Certainly, in this small number "thirty-four" there is much food for reflection. Not only did the five journals who backed this enterprise give the Index a liberal advertisement, but other journals as well and yet this is the total result.

The following extracts from the last circular letter should be noted:

Result of Vote on Motion No. 38. The proposed Program received eighteen affirmative votes, but two amendments were offered. The committee on program considered the amendments and other conditions which have arisen since the program was made. As the result, a revised program is submitted (See Motion No. 40).

Motion No. 40. In view of the fact that Mr. E. H. Gane, Chairman of the Section on Scientific Papers, has engaged Professor Baskerville to deliver a lecture on Radium before the association on Friday, September 8, at 8

3 p. m., Installation of Officers.
8 p. m., Lecture by Prof. Baskerville.
10 a. m., Last General Session.

In all other respects the program to stand as originally presented. While it may seem to some members desirable to have simultaneous sessions of the sections, this plan is not feasible on account of the necessary expense of an additional stenographer. Friday afternoon has been selected for installation of officers not with the view of occupying the whole afternoon, but mainly to gain that much time for the final session and thereby avoid the usual and annoying rush caused by effort to close all business. As the whole afternoon of Friday will not be needed for installation of officers, many will, no doubt, be glad to get some rest, as no time has been allowed for entertainments except Monday and Friday nights. At the Kansas City meeting, the association at large refused to approve the action of the committee on President's address in recommending the suggestion to set aside a special session for installation of officers, but much time will be gained if these functions be eliminated from the final session.

Motion No. 39. It is moved by John F. Patton that the following Financial Budget of expenses of the A. Ph. A. for 1905 and 6 be adopted. Seconded by Lewis C. Hopp.
